THE BREBEUF FOOD DRIVE WILL BE LAUNCHING NEXT WEEK

Brebeuf Jesuit is once again holding a canned food drive during Lent, ending on Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), March 24, 2016.

Last spring, our students, faculty, staff, and families participated in this meaningful drive supporting St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, donating enough cans of food to fill two semi-trucks. In addition, cash donations from our school community were able to buy nearly 30,000 pounds of food. To maximize our school’s impact, this year’s goal is for every student and staff member to collect 20 cans each.

St. Vincent de Paul feeds roughly 3,300 families every week, or roughly 12,000 individuals, many of whom are children and the elderly. Every can is helpful!

How to Help

To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), bring donations of support to the Main Lobby Desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.

By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis. Let’s bring in those cans and support your child’s homeroom. The winning homeroom will receive a pizza party!

Student Spotlight

ABBY HAYS '17
Loves about Brebeuf:
I really love that at Brebeuf we are given the chance to manage our own time. There’s free time in our schedules to do homework, hang out with friends, and do other things. I also love that teachers make an effort to help students and get to know us. My freshman Spanish teacher and I would talk about swimming a lot because we both swam. Those personal connections to teachers are so important.
Favorite Class:
This year, my favorite class is AP Language with Dr. Sperry because we talk about real issues and ways to improve our writing, which is a good skill. Throughout my time at Brebeuf, I’ve really enjoyed Honors Chemistry with Mrs. Esteb and Orchestra with Mr. Hoernemann because they are both fantastic teachers.
Future Plans:
I am not entirely sure yet what I want to study, but I am really interested in attending Georgetown University. I’m still researching my college options, but I do a lot of community service helping children with disabilities so doing something like that as a career would be my dream job.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Swim Team
Swim Club at The Rivera
Orchestra
GSA
Asian Club
SWAT Club
Random Fact:
I collect moose stuff including stuffed animals, earrings, and pajama pants
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
There’s a lot of work to do for classes at Brebeuf so it is very academically rigorous. With all the assignments and tests, there’s a lot to do, but teachers are always here to help when it gets too difficult. If you manage your time correctly you can make it work. There can be a challenge with balancing everything because each class has many assignments so you need to prioritize when you can get things done. I’m currently taking AP Physics, and that class is very hard. It requires a great deal of work and effort to ensure you truly understand it.
Would you rather…
Eat pizza or ice cream as the only food for the rest of your life?
I would rather eat ice cream, specifically Moose Tracks, because I am not a fan of pizza.
Be known for a one-hit wonder for a novel or a song?
I would rather be known for a one-hit novel because I like to write. Also, I think you could live more of a normal life after writing the novel than having the song.
Live in a houseboat or RV?
I would rather live in a RV because you could travel the country and see everything.
Live life as a dog or cat?
I would rather live as a dog because dogs in America have a good life. I know my dogs are spoiled.
Be stuck on a train or plane for 24 hours?
I would rather be stuck on a train because I do not like planes and there’s more room to walk around in the train.
Alia Martin '17 Named 2015-16 Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year!
Brebeuf Jesuit junior Alia Martin has been named the 2015-2016 Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year! Winners of this award are selected based on athletic achievement, high academic achievement, and personal character.
Alia’s performance on the field, including leading the Braves to a 22-2-1 record this past season and a state championship is mirrored in her work as a student at Brebeuf Jesuit. Alia maintains a 4.0 GPA while being involved with Brebeuf’s Student Athletic Leadership Team and volunteering as a math tutor and youth soccer coach.
“At Brebeuf Jesuit, we call our students to discover and cultivate the fullness of their God-given talents as a responsibility and as an act of worship,” said Father Jack Dennis, S.J. “Alia Martin lives the mission of Brebeuf Jesuit everyday, through her spirit, care for others and uplifting presence in our school. Brebeuf Jesuit is blessed to have her for another year, allowing our school community to continue to be positively impacted through her work both on and off the field.”
Alia has verbally committed to play soccer at the University of Michigan in the Fall of 2017. Alia’s sister, Reilly, is currently a freshman on the Women’s Soccer Team at the University of Michigan and also won the Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year last year, while a senior here at Brebeuf Jesuit. This is the first time in Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year history that sisters have won this prestigious honor in back-to-back years.
"Alia is the co-president-elect of the Student Athletic Leadership Team, which carries with it the added honor of being selected by her peers," said Ted Hampton, Athletic Director. "Alia is most deserving of this award and the honor it brings to the Brebeuf community and the Martin family."
CONGRATULATIONS ALIA!

Brebeuf Bistro - Carafes & Canvas Auction Committee Needs Your Help!

Question:  Are you new to Bistro this year and are wondering about the Gift Card Boards?
Answer: During the the event, Brebeuf students volunteer to sell these to parents during the Silent portion of the Bistro auction. These gift cards are GENEROUSLY donated by parents.
Question:  How can I help?
Answer: If you have not volunteered this year, and are looking to help in a small way, there two easy ways to do it below.
  1. Did you receive or buy one too many gift cards during the holidays, and its just laying around the house waiting to be used? We would LOVE it!
  2. During your daily travels do you stop at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle, Target, Noodles or Panera? Are you eating out at any restaurants? Next time you are ordering your latte or lunch, please consider adding a gift card to your order.
And to make it really easy for you – simply give the gift cards to your student to drop off at the Main Lobby Desk, and Brebeuf will handle the rest! Your help is greatly appreciated!
Looking forward to seeing you at Bistro!

Scheduling News from the Academic Counseling Department

Academic Counselors visited all Religion classrooms on Wednesday, January 27, and Thursday, January 28, to assist freshman, sophomore, and junior students with entering their course selections through Portals for the 2016-2017 academic year. It was an all-day endeavor; but it was successfully completed and the students did an outstanding job coming to class prepared with their completed course selection sheets that they had received the week before in class meetings.

The next step is for each student to have an individual meeting with his or her academic counselor during the month of February or March in order to finalize these course selections and also to discuss their four-year graduation plan, current grades, and college/career aspirations. Each student received an email that contains a link to his or her counselor’s February and March calendars so they can sign up for a 30 minute meeting during either a PRT or break. All scheduling meetings will be concluded by the end of March. Brebeuf appreciates your patience as we work on getting all of our students successfully scheduled for the 2016-2017 school year!

Progress Reports

Teachers have posted Progress Reports to the Reports tab in the Portals. To view these reports, click on More and then Reports.
For more detailed information about your student's grade, selecting Scores while viewing your student's progress report will give you the most recent information regarding your student's academic progress.
Questions regarding academic performance should be directed to the classroom teacher.
Any technical concerns can be directed to Amy Pitcher at apitcher@brebeuf.org, or Jen Wagle at jwagle@brebeuf.org.

Umayr Shaikh ’17 Selected as a Winner of The Inaugural Genentech Science Award

Brebeuf Jesuit student Umayr Shaikh ’17 has been selected as a recipient of The Inaugural Genentech Emperor Science Award. The award program is designed to encourage high school students to explore careers in science, specifically cancer research and care, through a unique mentoring program.

Out of 1200 applicants, only 100 are chosen for the award which allows students the chance to be paired with a mentoring scientist to collaborate on a multi-week cancer research project. Umayr will have the opportunity to not only work with an esteemed scientist, but will also receive a stipend for the project and a Google Chrome Notebook, and the chance to continue the mentoring program for the future.

Congratulations Umayr!

Congratulations to Benjamin Kallmyer '16 and the Brebeuf Robotics Team

Brebeuf's Robotics Team competed in the City of Indianapolis Vex Robotic Championships on January 23-24, against 59 other high schools at the Indiana Convention Center.
Benjamin Kallmyer ’16 won the Vex Robotics City of Indianapolis Design Award, which is one of the highest awards presented based on robotic design. With most high schools in attendance having large teams, Benjamin's accomplishment is that much more impressive as he represented Brebeuf as the only single student team during the Sunday tournament. Benjamin designed, built and drove the robot for the tournament. Assistance with programming however, was a team effort.
The City of Indianapolis Vex Robotic Championship is sponsored by The Mayor’s Office and Roche. The awards were presented by Indiana Mayors, Superintendents and leaders from businesses including Roche, Rolls-Royce, Eli Lilli, and Rose Hulman.
