Shatakshee Dhongde, associate dean for academic affairs and a professor in the School of Economics, received a grant from the HBCU Research Collaboration Forum for her proposal, "Analyzing Food Insecurity in Atlanta." She and a Morehouse College colleague will research the extent of food insecurity in Atlanta and use AI and machine learning models to help identify factors that predict food insecurity in at-risk households.

Laura Taylor, professor and chair of the School of Economics, presented her paper “Birth Outcomes and Air Pollution Exposures” at the 30th annual Ulvon Conference on Environmental Economics, hosted by the Center for Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of Umea in Sweden.

Yeqing Kong (Literature, Media, and Communication) recently gave two talks — one on "Green Gentrification, Immaterial Labor, and Geospatial Visualization: Analyzing the Atlanta BeltLine" at the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing conference; and another on "Navigating the Future: The AI Revolution in Technical Communication" at tcworld China 2024.

Sam Yuan (History and Sociology) attended the competitive Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research workshop on “Exploring and Analyzing Monitoring the Future Data: A Primer" at the University of Michigan. Yuan also presented on “The Impact of Work from Home on Older Women in Singapore During the Covid-19 Pandemic" at the Work Family Researcher Network conference in Montreal.

Jumpman: The Making and Meaning of Michael Jordan, a book by Johnny Smith (History and Sociology), earned 2nd place for biography at the Georgia Author of the Year Awards, presented by the Georgia Writers Association. Judges praised it as an "energetic yet thoughtful and amply sourced narrative that explores the life and times of the basketball icon."
