Important Information Regarding Conflicts with Final Exams

Students are asked to double-check the final exam schedule in order to determine whether or not they have a conflict. A conflict is defined as two exams scheduled at the same time or more than three exams scheduled in one day.
As always, during final exam days, students are required to be present only during the times they have exams. It is always difficult to find alternative times to take final exams and often it has a detrimental effect on a student’s performance on the exam. Therefore, we ask families to please make every effort to schedule around final exams so that all students are present at their assigned exam times.
  • If a student has to reschedule an exam due to an exam scheduling conflict (defined as two exams scheduled at the same time or more than three exams scheduled in one day), the student should come to the Principal’s Office and report the conflict by signing up on the list on Mrs. Simonson’s desk. The Principal’s Office will communicate the new schedule for the exam to the student and teachers. Extended time test-takers will continue to report and reschedule conflicts through Christina Rhodes, Director of Academic Counseling.
  • If a student is requesting to reschedule an exam due to a personal conflict (surgery, family need, etc.), the student or parent should first contact Shani Simonson in the Principal’s Office at ssimonson@brebeuf.org or 317 524-7080. The student will then pick up a form from the Principal’s Office, that will need to be taken to all of their teachers for whom exams need to be rescheduled. Teachers will indicate whether the exam may be taken prior to the scheduled exam date, or after. The student then returns the completed form to the Principal’s Office by December 11. The Principal’s Office will schedule the time and place for each exam, and will communicate the new schedule to the student and teachers.
  • If a student misses an exam due to unexpected illness or emergency on an exam day, the student or parent should call or email Shani Simonson in the Principal’s Office at ssimonson@brebeuf.org or 317 524-7080. The Principal’s Office will reschedule the exam for a later date, and will communicate the new schedule for the exam to the student and teachers.

CONGRATULATIONS DILLON HOWELL '18!
Senior Dillon Howell was honored during last Friday’s Football State Championship competition as the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award Winner!
Remarkably, this makes THREE WINNERS for Brebeuf Jesuit this fall!
To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must meet a large amount criteria, and is judged based on their scholarship, mental attitude, athletic ability and leadership.
Greg VanSlambrook, Brebeuf Jesuit Principal, who nominated Dillon for this award said, “Dillon has distinguished himself in our college preparatory environment through excellence in scholarship, community service, leadership, and an outstanding high school career in football, hockey, track  and field, and lacrosse. Dillon is known at Brebeuf Jesuit as a caring young man and a fierce competitor. He is an extremely coachable athlete, who is particularly focused and dedicated to the task at hand. He possesses inherent leadership skills, which are made apparent daily by his efforts to motivate and positively lead his teammates.”
Dillon’s remarkable football accomplishments include:
  • Senior Year (14 games): 94 tackles, 2 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 6 pass break ups, 1 fumble recovery, 3 interceptions (1 returned for a touchdown).
  • Junior Year (10 games): 63 Tackles, .5 sacks, and 3.5 tackles for loss.
  • Sophomore Year (10 games): 38 Tackles, 1 sack, 5 tackles for loss, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception
Dillon is an active member of Student Council, serving on the Executive Council, and is an engaging leader on the Student Athletic Leadership Team.  He is an Ignatian Scholar, and member of the Lifting Club and Entrepreneurship Club.
He has been an active leader with Special Olympics of Indiana’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver Games, spending his first three years volunteering, and during this school year, he planned and executed the event as a member of the Student Athletic Leadership Team.  Dillon also volunteers with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Right Fit, and serves elementary school students at IPS 96 by assisting them with homework and recreational activities.
Even more impressive than his athletic achievements, Dillon has also been accepted into the United States Naval Academy.  He was an Honor Cadet at Sea Cadets Recruit Training where he was named the Recruit Petty Officer in charge of 47 recruits.  He also undertook the United States Naval Academy Summer STEM.
“Dillon Howell embodies the spirit behind what it means to Brebeuf Jesuit student and IHSAA Mental Attitude winner. He is a phenomenal student who has given back to his community through service, displays the courage and work ethic to excel across multiple disciplines, grounded in his faith tradition, and genuinely cares for everyone,” said Ted Hampton, Brebeuf Jesuit Athletic Director. “We are very blessed that he is a Brave and proud of all that he has accomplished on and off of the gridiron.”

Loves About Brebeuf
Oh wow, where do I start? I would have to agree with everyone else and say the people of Brebeuf truly make Brebeuf unique. The student-teacher relationships are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend such an incredible school. I also love the emphasis on social justice and community service that Brebeuf displays in the curriculum. Without Brebeuf, I truly do not know who I would be. Brebeuf has shaped me in so many positive ways and if I had gone to another school, I highly doubt I would be as passionate for social justice as I am today.
Favorite Class
My all-time favorite class would have to be AP Psychology with Mr. Petty. I was never bored in that class, everything Mr. Petty talked about interested me and I continue to psychoanalyze situations and people even today. Currently, my favorite class is Advanced Acting with Mr. Strader. It has been so much fun learning how to perform with puppets, practicing stage combat, and so much more.
Future Plans
I applied to IU, Purdue, Xavier, Loyola Chicago, Boston College, Baylor, and Tulane. While I’m not sure yet which I will attend, I am planning to study Psychology on the pre-med track. I hope to attend medical school and someday work for Doctors Without Borders.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Fall Play and Spring Musical

Conservation Club
Student Advocates for Gender Equality (VP)
Manager of Cross Country Team

Random Fact(s)
When I was ten years old, my family lived in Frankfurt, Germany for six months. Unfortunately, I have since lost all of my German language skills.
I have traveled to 37 different countries and 5 continents.
I am double jointed in my left shoulder and can do this odd trick that weirds a lot of people out.
I have never broken or fractured a bone, yet I believe I may be the clumsiest person alive.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
Currently, I would have to say my two favorite shows are Mindhunter and That 70s Show. Kind of a weird combination as one is a criminal psychology show and the other is a comedy, but I’m addicted to both.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I have been so blessed to be able to travel so many places, but one destination I would love to visit are the Galapagos Islands. I used to be terrified of snorkeling, but now I absolutely love it and the Galapagos Islands have incredible snorkeling sites to visit. I have seen pictures and videos of people swimming with sea lions and sea turtles in the Galapagos and it would be positively amazing to experience that for myself.
Do anything fun over Thanksgiving Break?
My grandma is visiting from Tennessee, so we had Thanksgiving dinner together then went out Black Friday shopping together. I also went to the football game last Friday and watched the boys play their hearts out. Not the ideal outcome, but it was still fun to see how many people came to cheer them on.
What led you to start a petition to pass hate crime laws in Indiana?
A number of things pushed me to take action. Brebeuf has always encouraged students to combat injustices and take action in the community, so I have always felt supported in speaking out for what I believe in. Participating in the fall play, The Laramie Project, helped me to empathize with victims of hate crimes and truly understand the gravity of them. Meeting Judy Shepard, mother of hate crime victim Matthew Shepard, gave me the courage to use my voice to fight for social justice. Attending the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington D.C. made me realize it is my responsibility to create a better future and my fight for change needs to start now. Finally, speaking with fellow classmate and friend, Max Siegel, about how few people use their voice for positive change when it doesn’t personally impact them, made this situation personal to me and was the final push to get me to take action and fight back against social injustices.
(You can read more about Emily's petition below)
What advice would you offer our Braves in the Class of 2021?
Don’t be afraid to ask your teachers for extra help. Forming a relationship with your teachers outside of the classroom helps tremendously throughout high school. I have become friends with a lot of my teachers and it is incredibly helpful to have those close bonds. Even if you feel like you’re not having difficulty in a class, it always helps to see your teachers outside the classroom, it shows your dedication to your education and your determination to succeed. I would also suggest attending as many sporting events as you can, not just football and basketball games. High school goes by in the blink of an eye so really embrace the high school experience while you can and bond with as many classmates as possible.

These IDs will remain the entire time the student is in college, so it’s important to keep track of them.
The National Center for College Costs works with students and parents to help them through the college financial aid process. See Michael Sprague's Work in the Cordell Gallery

The Visual & Performing Arts Department and the Mothers Association welcome Michael Sprague to the Cordell Gallery (facing the Principal's Office).  Sprague produces functional ceramic work which he describes as a combination of East and West:  "I use Asian forms (eastern) with crystalline glazes, which are European in origin (western). I sometimes like to incorporate wood or metallic looking elements to give a feel of antiquity.  Ultimately I try to make good work that is functional, yet meditative."
Sprague’s work will be on display through December 18 and is available for purchase. Please contact Joe Winhusen at jwinhusen@brebeuf.org if you would like more information.

Emily Myers '18 Advocating for Hate Crime Legislation

Senior Emily Myers has started a petition encouraging others to advocate for hate crime laws in Indiana. Emily needs support to take her petition to the next level.
Please read her message below.
From Emily Myers '18:
"After participating in the fall play, The Laramie Project, and attending the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington, D.C. during the first week of November, I was inspired to take action and advocate for hate crime laws in Indiana, one of five states without hate crime legislation in the United States. Just over a week ago, I started a petition voicing my support for hate crime laws and encouraging others to advocate for hate crime laws in Indiana. Every time my petition receives a signature, an email is sent to local senators and representatives about hate crime laws.
I have reached out to the Matthew Shepard Foundation about my petition and they were incredibly excited about my advocacy. They sent out a media blast about my petition and it has now been signed by people all over the world, including Taiwan, Vietnam, Poland, Germany, Venezuela, and Ireland. Thanks to the support of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, my petition is currently in the top 15% on Change.org.
Next week, Brebeuf's Social Justice Club will be educating Religion classes on the importance of hate crime laws and ways to take action in our own community. I plan to meet with local senator, John Ruckelshaus,on the issue, and I will not stop advocating for these laws until they are passed in Indiana.
If you feel so inspired, I encourage you to sign my petition here, contact or meet with local senators and representatives, and educate those around you on hate crime laws.
Lastly, I would like to thank Brebeuf Jesuit for giving me the opportunity to spread awareness on this issue and encouraging me to combat injustices." - Emily Myers '18
