A growing preference for natural products free from chemicals, along with a concern for the environment is driving the demand for herbal beauty products, which includes Rooibos.

Beauty guru and spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC), Adele du Toit says that not so long ago natural products were sold primarily in health food stores and farmers markets. “It was very niche and not taken seriously by the beauty industry, but now sleek new natural alternatives to mainstream beauty products are exploding onto the scene.”

She says there has been a universal shift towards ‘clean beauty’ across all cosmetic categories, with half of consumers seeking out organic, herbal brands, which in turn, is driving a growing preference for products containing Rooibos.

Adele explained that Rooibos is an excellent choice when it comes to natural beauty products, as it has anti-ageing properties, improves conditions like eczema and can even help to fight the onset of acne.

Du Toit also reminded us that our skin is one of the main gauges which tells us whether we are healthy on the inside too. “The truth is that plants and herbs can nourish and heal from the inside out. Using Rooibos is one of the best ways to keep our bodies glowing and vibrant.”

Looking for a summer drink that will keep you cool and nourished at the same time? We’ve found this fantastic recipe for a Rooibos, strawberry and orange smoothie! It is easy to make and delivers a quality drinkable meal.

Have a look at the recipe for one serving below:

Ingredients:

1 - 2 Rooibos tea bags
125 ml boiling water
225 g frozen strawberries
½ a peeled and chopped orange
125 g silken tofu
1 tbsp vanilla protein powder
1 tsp liquid honey, optional

Method:

1. Put the Rooibos bags in a teapot or heatproof jug and pour over the water. Steep for 8 to 10 minutes, then remove the bag. Leave to cool.

2. Put the tea, berries, tofu and protein powder into a blender and process until smooth. Sweeten to taste with honey and pour into glasses. Serve immediately.

Handy tip:

Silken tofu adds a lovely creamy richness.

Shop SA is a popular YouTube series hosted by the South African Embassy in Helsinki. In their most recent upload, they paid a visit to shops in Finland to showcase some of the quality Rooibos products that can be bought in this country to remind one of home!

They specifically looked at Forsman Rooibos Tea, which comes in three different flavours. This brand is certified by Fairtrade for those who are conscious about which products they purchase. They also show another popular brand, Nordqvist, which offers Rooibos tea in flavoured and unflavoured options.
