Michigan Home Heating Credit can save on bills

The Michigan Home Heating Credit is a way to save on heat and energy bills for qualifying low-income households.

Michigan residents can apply for the 2017 credit even if they do not file a Michigan state tax return.

The Michigan Department of Treasury reports about 315,000 people applied for the Michigan Home Heating Credit in 2016, with the average credit being $170.

To qualify, you must live in Michigan and you must own or rent a home or apartment, or a mobile home on a lot in a mobile home park.

Your household income must fall within these limits for the standard allowance:

The Michigan Home Heating Credit does not require that applicants be late on their bills, and is:

For all primary heating fuels, including electricity, natural gas, propane and deliverables such as oil, firewood and wood pellets
Available to renters paying their own heating and energy bills
Possible to submit it after tax season, with a September 30, 2018, filing deadline

Who should file?

You should file for a Michigan Home Heating Credit if all of the following apply:

You live in a Michigan homestead
You own or rent your residence
You were not a full-time student claimed as a dependent on another person's income tax return
You did not live in a college- or university-operated housing facility for the entire year
You did not live in a licensed care facility for the entire year
Your income is within income limits for the standard credit allowance (also listed above) or alternate credit

To get the Michigan Home Heating Credit, file a claim form (MI-1040CR-7) with the Michigan Department of Treasury. The credit, for most people, is based on a comparison between the standard allowance or actual heating costs and total household resources.
