Dear Eagle Nation,
We are entering the second week of classes and our students are already seizing opportunities, participating in student life activities, and taking their place as members of our campus community.
We formally welcomed the Class of 2027 to Coppin State University during Convocation on August 31. Convocation is a long-standing tradition and formal acknowledgement of the beginning of the academic year. It is during this assembly that new students are welcomed to Eagle Nation.

Our newest Eagles made a statement as they marched into the James Weldon Johnson Auditorium, dressed in matching white polo shirts. Together, they cheered and celebrated joining a community that has grown and endured for more than 123 years.
The theme for the Class of 2027 is Eagles Ignited, which reflects the spirit of our namesake, Fanny Jackson Coppin. She had a passion for service, equality, and education, and ignited that passion in others for generations. I charged our newest Eagles, and our soon-to-be alumni, to match our energy as a place that sparks new knowledge, nurtures their potential, and provides experiences that will transform them into true leaders. I challenged them to build on our legacy by staying committed to their highest ideals, demonstrating integrity in all they do, and being persons of unwavering character in every situation.

I am confident our Eagles are ready to ignite Baltimore, and the world, with their passion, persistence, creativity, and brilliance. Our students are the reason we are here. Their positive energy and excitement are palpable, and contagious.
If you have not been back to campus lately, I encourage you to experience the campus for yourself, bask in our school spirit, and be inspired by our students who will make a difference while on our campus, and well after we send them into the world as graduates of our great university.

Coppin State University Featured During Maryland HBCU Week
Maryland Public Television is celebrating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), with programming that showcases the HBCU experience, and highlights the contribution of these institutions to Maryland, and our nation.
Maryland HBCU Week programming will air through September 10.

"What's New at Your HBCU" will air Friday, September 8, 2023 at 7 p.m. Host Jeff Salkin interviewed President Anthony Jenkins about the great transformation underway at Coppin State, our new additions to campus, and plans for the future.

Systems Contractor News recently featured Coppin State University for the redesign and technological upgrades to the Arena Video Production Suite inside of the Physical Education Complex. The updates made during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery, allow Coppin State Athletics and its broadcasting partners to broadcast high-quality video of competitions, and to incorporate live streaming.

College of Health Professions Names Two Interim Chairpersons
The College of Health Professions begins the new academic year with new interim chairpersons. Associate Professor Lori Harvin, DNP (‘98) is the Interim Chairperson for Baccalaureate Nursing Education.
Dr. Harvin is licensed as a Registered Nurse in Maryland and has over twenty years of experience caring for clients with multiple comorbidities.
Dr. Harvin is committed to doing her part in eliminating health disparities through providing care in underserved communities and educating future nurses who can contend with the conditions of healthcare delivery and become catalysts of change.

Assistant Professor Yolanda Savoy, Ed.D., is the interim Chairperson for the Health and Health Education Department. Dr. Savoy has served as the Program Coordinator for the Health and Health Education Program.
Before joining Coppin State, she spearheaded health programs for marginalized and underrepresented communities in Richmond, Virginia.

Beverly Richards Accepted into Leadership Baltimore County Class of 2024
Beverly Richards, Director of Strategic Partnerships in the College of Health Professions, is now as a member of Leadership Baltimore County Class of 2024.
Leadership Baltimore County’s Signature Program is a 10-week experience that brings together high achievers with diverse perspectives to heighten their civic awareness, enhance their organizational effectiveness and become a driving force for positive change in their workplaces and the greater Baltimore County community.

Get ready to tee up at the 20th Coppin State University Golf Classic on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Greystone Golf Course. There is something for everyone! Join more than 100 other supporters of Eagle Nation for a day on the course, or enjoy a golf-themed experience for non-golfers.
This year, we are aiming to raise $100,000 to support our Coppin State scholar-athletes!
