Marking a Milestone On Sunday, 5/22, the J.D. and LL.M. Class of 2022 processed down the aisle in tams and gowns and, as family and friends cheered from packed stands, crossed the Commencement stage one by one, donned ceremonial hoods, and descended the stairs as the newest St. John’s Law graduates. Scholarly Activities Professor Robin Boyle has been promoted to Editor-in-Chief of the editorial board of Perspectives: Teaching Legal Research and Writing, an online journal sponsored and distributed free of charge by Thomson Reuters as a service to the legal research and writing (LRW) community. She served previously as the journal's Assistant Editor-in-Chief and as an editorial team member.
Professors Gina Calabrese and Jeff Sovern spoke at a recent conference, Teaching Consumer Law in the New Normal, hosted by the University of Houston Law Center's Center for Consumer Law and the UC Berkeley School of Law's Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice. Professor Calabrese's talk was titled Online Dispute for Consumer Credit Cases, while Professor Sovern spoke about Using Learning Science to Teach Consumer Law.
Over at the Volokh Conspiracy, Professor Mark Movsesian asks, "Has America Given Up on Free Speech?" The post excerpts and builds on an essay he wrote for Law & Liberty reviewing Jacob Mchangama's new book, Free Speech: A History from Socrates to Social Media.
Professor Eva Subotnik's book chapter, "Dead-Hand Guidance: A Preferable Testamentary Approach for Artists," has been published in Posthumous Art, Law and the Art Market: The Afterlife of Art (Routledge, 2022). Also, Professor Subotnik and Willamette University College of Law Professor Andrew Gilden presented their forthcoming article, "Copyright’s Capacity Gap," an interdisciplinary paper on legal issues growing out of the Britney Spears conservatorship, at the Critical Trusts & Estates Conference 2022 and at the Mid-Career Intellectual Property Scholars Workshop.
Impact Work Professor Elaine Chiu was instrumental in producing the Asian American Bar Association of New York's (AABANY) report on anti-Asian violence in New York City that's spotlighted in this CNN story. The report has been covered by other media outlets as well, including Gothamist, CBS News, and the New York Law Journal (registration wall).
Professor Christine Lazaro, director of the Law School's in-house Securities Arbitration Clinic, has been appointed to the SEC's Investor Advisory Committee. Established under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the committee advises the Commission on regulatory priorities and various initiatives to help protect investors and promote the integrity of the U.S. securities markets. Media Mention After Elon Musk announced his plans to buy Twitter, the New Yorker asked several experts in the field for their take on Twitter and how it should change. One of them was St. John's Law Professor Kate Klonick. You can read what she shared here.

In the Field This semester, the 3L students in the Law School's Securities Arbitration Clinic provided comments on two FINRA regulatory notices. The first notice, responding to FINRA's Reg Notice 22-08 on Complex Products and Options, was drafted by Brendan Beirne, Abaigeal Franson, Megan Hardy, Matthew Kipnis, Gabriela Morales, and Nicholas Servider. The second notice, responding to FINRA's Reg Notice 22-09 on Accelerated Arbitration Proceedings for Seriously Ill or Elderly Parties, was produced by Skye Boutte, Chelsea Karen, Brenna O'Connor, and Sebastian Vollkommer.
In Their Own Words Congratulations to Raul J. Muniz '22, whose paper, "The Monetization of Athlete Biometric Data in Less Centrally Regulated Professional Sports—A New Revenue Stream or a Data Privacy Nightmare?" earned second place in the 2022 Sports Lawyers Association Writing Competition.
