NSLS-II Microelectronics Measurements Campaign Pilot
|
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory invites proposals for a Microelectronics Measurements Campaign Pilot focused on developing collaborative experiments that address critical measurement challenges in the development and manufacturing of microelectronics devices. This pilot is intended to bring together researchers from industry, academia, and NSLS-II to tackle high-impact science and technology questions through coordinated experimental campaigns. By combining advanced experimental methods at NSLS-II with complementary measurements and expertise from participating organizations, the pilot aims to accelerate experimentation and data analysis while establishing a new model for sustained collaboration and user access.
Selected teams will benefit from coordinated beam time access, close collaboration with NSLS-II scientists on experimental design and measurements, development of data analysis and evaluation workflows, and opportunities to increase the impact for their research.
The pilot will use NSLS-II’s existing Block Allocation Group (BAG) proposal framework. Proposals must follow standard BAG requirements, including peer-reviewed publication of results and address the additional Microelectronics Measurement Campaign criteria.
Proposal submission details and deadlines: Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET. Proposals should be submitted through the NSLS-II PASS system following the guidelines for BAG proposals. The proposal titles should be prefaced by [Microelectronics PILOT] followed by the descriptive title text.

Call for Proposals: Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program |
The Carnegie Fellows Program explores the many ways in which political polarization in the United States and abroad manifests itself in society, and suggests ways that it may be mitigated. This is a limited competition from the Office of the Provost.
Guidelines and eligibility:

- Stony Brook may nominate one senior scholar and one junior scholar.
- Junior scholars are scholars who earned a Ph.D. within the last 10 years.
- Senior scholars are scholars who earned a Ph.D. more than 10 years ago.

Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident to be considered.
- The fellowship is worth up to $200,000 to support up to two years of work that will result in a book or major study.
- Criteria prioritize the originality and promise of the research, its promise to offer actionable solutions, and the scholar's plan for communicating findings to a broad audience.

Request for Comment: Draft NIH Biosafety Policy for Research Involving Biohazards |
NIH seeks public input on its Draft NIH Biosafety Policy for Research Involving Biohazards, which, when finalized, will supersede the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules. Specific topics include: scope of research covered by the new policy (definition of biohazards); structure of tiered oversight (i.e., Federal, institutional, and investigator); Continued utility of Risk Groups (RGs) as a baseline for risk assessment, particularly when agents are being genetically modified, vs use of Biosafety Levels (BSL); effectiveness of compliance and enforcement mechanisms for ensuring biosafety; and implementation resources. Comments are welcome on all aspects of the draft policy, including the scope, risk assessment, categories of oversight based on risk, roles and responsibilities, IBC functions, and procedures. NIH is also seeking comments on draft incident reporting and IBC meeting minute templates.

DOE Office of Science SCAC Facilities Subcommittee Community Town Hall |
The SCAC Facilities Subcommittee has been charged with reviewing a summary of proposed facilities and upgrades, identifying any gaps, and, in a constrained budget environment, prioritizing the new or upgraded facilities that are most crucial to the needs of the nation for the next ten years (2026-2036). The Subcommittee invites the community to participate in a virtual town hall to help inform the development of a roadmap for DOE Office of Science investments and activities in major facilities. They also welcome written input from community members wishing to provide more detailed input. The Subcommittee is seeking input from universities, national laboratories, and the scientific user communities.

Request For Information: NIH Common Fund is Soliciting Ideas for NIH-wide Challenges and Opportunities |
The NIH requests ideas for biomedical and behavioral research challenges and opportunities that may be of interest to the Common Fund. These ideas may inform activities to advance areas of science relevant to these challenges/opportunities, including, but not limited to, scientific workshops, pilot initiatives, and/or future Common Fund programs. NIH encourages idea submissions that may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- A critical challenge or exciting emerging opportunity in biomedical/behavioral research
- Resources, tools, or knowledge that are needed to address the important challenge or opportunity
- Scientific advancements or other factors that make addressing the important challenge or opportunity particularly timely

Critical challenges that small labs or research groups face with respect to funding, contracting, or navigating the regulatory landscape
- Priorities from "Advancing NIH's Mission Through a Unified Strategy" and "Make Our Children Healthy Again Strategy.

Responders must also consider the potential impact on human health, and completed work products that could be accomplished in 5-10 years. Ideas should be concise; submissions should focus on broad concepts rather than detailed descriptions.

The Genesis Mission’s National Science and Technology (S&T) Challenges list was recently updated. We encourage you to review the new S&T challenges, which include ones led by NIH and NASA for advancing American health, detection of biological threats, and space exploration. The Office of Strategic Research Initiatives team is identifying SBU’s research strengths that are responsive to these new S&T challenges, and are preparing to assist the research community, along with OPD and OSP, once a formal RFA is released. NSF released a Dear Colleague Letter that encourages submissions to open solicitations in support of the Genesis Mission, particularly Leveraging and Building AI for Science, Building Foundations for S&T Challenges, and Growing Workforce and Capacity for AI in Science.

NIH RFI on Proposed Changes to Reporting Outcomes from Peer Review |
The NIH has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on Proposed Changes to Reporting Outcomes from Peer Review, seeking input on proposed changes to the reporting of peer review outcomes. To implement the Unified Funding Strategy announced in Nov. 2025, NIH proposes to report peer review outcomes as falling into one of three broad categories, determined by overall impact score: Most Competitive (based on the top 25% of final overall impact scores), Competitive (based on the 26-50% of final overall impact scores), or Not Discussed (scores >50%, or ND). Notably, NIH proposes to no longer release final overall impact scores and percentiles to PIs or NIH staff.
Deadline for submitting an individual response to NIH: Anyone who is interested in responding directly to NIH as an individual may do so. OR&I has prepared a document containing sample response text that can be used for individual submissions. Comments are due by October 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET.

Translational Research Funding Opportunity: Center for Biotechnology BioREACH Program |
Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development. BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

Simons Collaborations in Mathematics and the Physical Sciences

Description: The aim of the Simons Collaborations in MPS program is to stimulate progress on fundamental scientific questions of major importance in mathematics, theoretical physics and theoretical computer science. A Simons Collaboration in MPS should address a mathematical or theoretical topic of fundamental scientific importance, where a significant, new development creates a novel area for exploration or provides a new direction for progress in an established field.
Institutional Limit: None.
PI Eligibility: The collaboration director must hold a tenured faculty, or equivalent, position at an educational institution with a Ph.D. program in the director’s department at the time of application and for the duration of the award. PIs and co-Investigators (co-Is) must hold a tenured or tenure-track faculty, or equivalent, position at an educational institution at the time of application and for the duration of the award. There are no restrictions on the department and/or discipline of the director or PIs/co-Is. See solicitation for full eligibility requirements.
Award: Up to $2M per year for an initial period of four years. The foundation would allow the annual budget to vary from $2M as long as the total four-year budget is no more than $8M.
Cost Share: Not required
Deadline(s): LOI due October 29, 2026. Full Proposal (by invite) due February 24, 2027. Project teams may be invited to come to the foundation to present their research plan.
