Volunteer Appreciation Happy Hour
| |
|
It's no secret: we love our volunteers! In May, we were grateful to show our volunteers some appreciation with our annual Volunteer Appreciation Happy Hour at the gorgeous Eastwood Farm and Winery (a 2024 Wordplay sponsor!).
As always, we want to deeply thank our volunteers for the incredible work that you do! Together, we are able to serve over 400 adults in the greater Charlottesville community. Thank you for making a difference!

Members of the board and staff announcing the Volunteers of the Year

| | |
|
When deciding who will be the Volunteers of the Year, the staff looks at who has been active in multiple areas of Literacy Volunteers, going above and beyond what we recognize as an already big commitment. This year we chose two individuals who exemplify “above and beyond.”
Pat Milberger has volunteered with us since October 2019. He and his first student not only survived but somehow managed to thrive during the lockdown and shift to online and alternative types of tutoring. Pat swears he was just there to provide the student some guidance and the student would have been successful no matter what. The student, however, firmly credits Pat for helping reach his goal of becoming a student at UVA, which is where he’s currently on a pre-dentistry track. Since ending with that student, Pat helped his second student earn his US Citizenship and is now getting ready to start with his third student. In addition to tutoring, Pat has been a WordPlay volunteer for the past few years and has helped with New Tutor Training as part of the Tutor Roundtable. He also brings so much positive energy with him every time he comes to the office.
Kathy Sublette has been a volunteer since December 2022 and has been doing amazing work with her first student, helping her pass her Certified Nurse Aide test and preparing for more rigorous college level work; however, that hasn’t been her biggest contribution to LVCA. When Kathy, a retired educator from Western Albemarle High School, first started, she mentioned that she was familiar with standardized testing and would be happy to use those skills if needed. Over the last year, Kathy has tested more than 50 students (and even more over the next few weeks), having dedicated more than 100 hours to student testing. She took over almost all the post-testing, providing feedback to tutors, and helping Literacy Volunteers meet state assessment goals. On top of that, she has also volunteered at WordPlay and helped with New Tutor Trainings.
Please join us in congratulating and recognizing these wonderful individuals!

Volunteer Training Opportunities
| |
We can always use more volunteer tutors!
Literacy Volunteers would not run without our volunteer tutors (it's part of our name, after all), and we still have spots available in our upcoming training sessions. If you know of anyone who is interested in signing up, please encourage them to do so. We are always happy to answer any questions people might have, too. Just reach out at (434) 977-3838 or by email.
