More Details on VoiceThread Update - June 30 |
An update to Voicethread was announced last fall and on May 14, 2024 everyone was switched to the new version automatically. But don't worry, it’s not a dramatic overhaul. A few features have been moved and a few were added to make actions and navigation more intuitive and convenient.
|
- Unless the VT item is a video, there is no timeline of comments at the bottom of the display.
-
The comment creation tool and the slide navigation tool have moved to the bottom left side.
- Recording countdown (3..2..1) is now optional.
|
- One conversation mode (shows all comments in a single list, rather than displaying by slide)
-
Zooming/panning and jumping around slides while commenting.

Changes to Durable Links (OpenAthens) |
The GW Libraries, including the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, need to change how durable links are handled. The proxy tool, evident when durable links start with ‘proxygw.wrlc.org’, is being replaced with OpenAthens. OpenAthens is connected to single sign on (SSO).
|
The most important points to know |
- The Libraries are working with Blackboard Admin to update links in Blackboard, so most links should continue to function, however
-
This does not apply to links in uploaded files (ex. Word or PDF). If you have uploaded documents with durable links in Blackboard, like syllabi, those will need to be updated manually.
- Links for courses in the next few semesters should be checked more carefully than usual.
|
Why bother with durable links? |
Durable links take students directly to journal articles and online textbooks through the library’s subscriptions. A durable link will take a student directly to the full-text, avoiding paywalls. Durable links also conform with copyright law. Uploading paid resources to Blackboard does not. And durable links are more accessible in that they will provide students with all available versions of a reading, corrections, and any additional associated media.
