Volunteer at the Garden!
We have a range of opportunities for people to get outside, get involved and make a difference! You can be a Garden Greeter, a Garden Guide or help out at an event or a workshop. Volunteering can be a great way to meet like-minded people interested in plants and this amazing part of the world that we share.
Volunteer Orientation and Training
Join us on the last Wednesday of every month (except August and December). In our orientation session we will welcome new volunteers, update everyone on what’s new in the garden and invite a Garden Curator for a private tour of their area of expertise in the Garden.

May in the Garden
Because spring arrived early on the West Coast this year (a month ahead of schedule in some cases), the normal discussion of May flowers is somewhat academic. Tree peonies, for example, are normally flowering near the end of May, but unless visitors came to the garden in April or plan for the first week of May, they'll be lucky to see these spectacular blooms at all.  Likewise the normally May-blooming rhododendrons. So, what's to see in May? Plenty, but high on the list this year are evergreen magnolias. After an excellent ripening period last summer and a mild winter, many of the Chinese evergreen magnolias in the David C. Lam Asian Garden are going to have their best year to date. Two rare species in particular are worth mentioning here.

UBC Alumna contributes $250,000 to create sustainability field school at UBC Botanical Garden

A generous gift by UBC alumna Patricia (Paddy) Wales (BA, ’75) has made a new Sustainable Communities Field School at the UBC Botanical Garden possible.

The Sustainable Communities Field School is a three-year pilot project that will offer fun, engaging education on sustainability for corporate employees. The curriculum for each company will focus on their specific sustainability goals and will build on proven methods of creating positive change pioneered by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Participants will bond outside of their work environment, enjoy a day at the Garden, and learn about sustainability and climate change. The program aims to motivate participants to make changes at work, at home, and in the community. The program will include follow-up activities to encourage lasting change.
