Good Evening:
Tomorrow is the 17th anniversary of 9/11. Here's our look back at what some Indiana radio stations did on that tragic day. Northeast
Northeast Indiana Public Radio's WBOI (89.1fm, Fort Wayne) local All Things Considered host and reporter Araceli Gomez-Aldana exits, after about a year. Ms. Gomez-Aldana will join Side Effects Public Media.
Adams Radio Group's R&B/WJFX-HD3 (107.9fm, New Haven) and FM translator W245CA (96.9fm, Fort Wayne) midday host Angel Suttle exits and joins Alpha Media's WMBX (102.3fm) for Friday and Saturday evenings in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Northwest
Eastlan Ratings begins surveying the Lafayette radio market. Neuhoff Media is their first Lafayette customer. In Indiana, Eastlan also surveys Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and Vincennes.
Eastcentral
In November 1990, Anderson University signed on their Contemporary Christian/WQME (98.7fm, Anderson) as one of many "80 90 drop ins." Last year, Anderson University announced that "98.7 The Song" didn't fit with the university's new strategic plan, and the process began to find a buyer. At the end of May this year, WQME flipped to Educational Media Foundation's Contemporary Christian "Air 1" format. Today, Anderson University filed a sales document with the FCC, announcing that they're selling WQME for $725,000 to Educational Media Foundation.
Brewer Broadcasting's Adult Hits/WHON (930am, Centerville) and FM translator W269BP (101.7fm, Richmond) flip formats to Classic Hits under GM Amy Dillon and PD Jen Steele. Here's their website and on-air lineup:
Mornings: Phil Quinn (now joined by show producer Noah Bevington
Middays: Ron Wylie, Jr.
Afternoons Jen Steele
Nights: The Tom Kent Show
Before we leave Tingler Road, Brewer Broadcasting also welcomes Tim Murphy as Production Director. Mr. Murphy most recently worked for Ohana Media Group as Cluster OM and morning host ("Murf in the Morning") at Country/KCRX ("Eagle Country 103.9").
Central
Correction: Charese Fruge joins Radio One as CHR format captain and PD of their CHR/WNOW-FM (100.9fm, Speedway) and KROI in Houston, Texas. Ms. Fruge will be based in Indianapolis, although she last programmed in Houston for CBS Radio at what was then KKHH.
After nearly three years in the GM chair, Tom Stemlar exits as the leader of the Cumulus/Indianapolis' three radio stations. Mr. Stemlar joined Cumulus in 2016 after working as SVP/Sales for Bonten Media Group.
Succeeding Mr. Stemlar is Chuck Fredrick. Mr. Fredrick worked for 18 years for iHeart Media, most recently as their Market and Regional President in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Also at Cumulus, CHR/WYRG (93.9fm, Lawrence), Robert Sidloski ("Sid Kelly") becomes PD, succeeding Jay Michaels. Mr. Sidloski last worked as PD at sister WABD in Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Sidloski previously worked with OM Christopher Layfield ("Boomer") in St. Louis (KSLZ), and Richmond, Virginia (WRVQ).
Mr. Sidloski isn't a stranger to Indiana; four years ago, he co-hosted mornings in Fort Wayne for Sarkes Tarzian's AC/WAJI (95.1fm, Fort Wayne).
After 12 years with Emmis Communications, Mel McMahon exits. Ms. McMahon began her radio career as the receptionist for Sarkes Tarzian's WGCL/WTTS in Bloomington, and then worked for multiple Indianapolis broadcasters: Radio One ("Radio Now 100.9" and "Indy's Music Channel"), Tribune ("Fox 59"), Cumulus (what was then-"i-94") and then Emmis.
Most recently, Ms. McMahon did weekends on Emmis' Soft AC/WYXB (105.7fm, Indianapolis) and at Country/WLHK (97.1fm, Shelbyville). She will now focus her efforts on her digital venture Indiana Originals.
Southwest
In the springtime of 1951, what was then known as Evansville College signed on a little 10 watt radio station: WEVC (91.5fm). The station started with just a few hours of programming each day, with their primary audience as the college community. WEVC grew, moving from a mono broadcast to a stereo broadcast in 1975, becoming WUEV in 1977 (Evansville College became The University of Evansville in 1967), adding power along the way, and holding the high honor of being the first Indiana radio station to stream online in 1996.
Throughout the years, rumors would sometimes surface about the University getting rid of WUEV. John Martin at the Evansville Courier & Press reported yesterday that the university needs money, and while there's been no decision about whether to keep or sell WUEV, social media has reached out to new University of Evansville president Christopher Pietruszkiewiz, encouraging him to keep WUEV as an important part of the University. There's also a Facebook page.
