Safe Harbor Stands with Black Lives


Safe Harbor stands with people throughout our communities who demand justice in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other victims of racial violence and discrimination. We recognize that the roots of violence that cause domestic abuse are the same roots that lead to racism, discrimination, hate crimes and many other forms of injustice and oppression. We must recognize and speak up against the racial biases that infect the hearts of individuals, institutions and systems, ultimately leading to discrimination and danger in the lives of people of color. We can work together to shed light on racial injustice, demand better from ourselves and others, and listen to and learn from the voices and lived experiences of BIPOC. Learn more about how domestic violence disproportionately affects people of color and other marginalized groups, as well as what you can do on our website.

Over the past eight years, this event has raised over $60,500 for Safe Harbor's domestic violence intervention services and prevention initiatives, and we are grateful to all sailors, participants and community supporters.

To further define our purpose and set the foundation for future success, we have created an ‘anthem to describe’ why Safe Harbor exists, what we know to be true and our invitation to our community to change.

Cycle Tour
2020 would have marked the 15th year for Safe Harbor’s Cycle Tour. Prior to COVID-19, we were already facing some tough choices surrounding our events due to significant funding cuts to our Anderson Shelter. Ultimately, we made the incredibly difficult decision that we would not be able to continue on with our Iva-based Cycle Tour. Had we tried to do so, this pandemic would have made the event impossible to continue safely.  

So many of us at Safe Harbor and in our community are wistful, remembering the many years of fun we’ve had raising money to help families impacted by domestic violence. And, remembering Betty Lewis who started it all. We are so thankful for the people who made this event the amazing success that it was, raising over $360,000 for Safe Harbor. Thank you!

Domestic Violence in the LGBTQ+ Community

June is Pride Month and Safe Harbor takes this opportunity to raise awareness about domestic violence and intimate partner abuse faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Domestic violence is not only a women's issue; people of all genders can experience abuse from their partners, in fact research shows that people in the LGBTQ+ community experience domestic violence at equal or even higher rates compared to their heterosexual counterparts.  

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:
  • "43.8% of lesbian women and 61.1% of bisexual women have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their life, as opposed to 35% of heterosexual women." 
  • "26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, in comparison to 29% of heterosexual men." 
  • "Transgender victims are more likely to experience intimate partner violence in public, compared to those who do not identify as transgender."
