WEEKLY COMMUNITY COVID DASHBOARD
Below is this week's update.
Please note that the increased number of Covid-related absences this week is due to the potential close contact and thereby quarantine of many of the members of one of our athletic teams. There are two things the community can learn from this: One, though we are in the home stretch of the school year, we still need to be vigilant. Two, those team members who had already been fully vaccinated were not required to quarantine from close contact alone, per the CDC guidelines; which is a reminder of the encouragement to be vaccinated.
During this last week of the school year, all of our school's masking and other Covid risk mitigation policies remain in place. The Marion County mask mandate will end soon, but not until after the school year. For those participating in summer school, keep an eye out for updated Covid policies for summer classes, which have not yet been determined, and which we will send prior to the first day of summer school.

JEN LAMASTER ACCEPTS LEADERSHIP ROLE WITH MIDWEST JESUIT PROVINCE
We are pleased to announce that Assistant Principal Jen LaMaster has been appointed as the Associate Provincial Assistant for Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education for the Jesuits Midwest Province.
Jen's exciting new position means she will be stepping down as Assistant Principal and leaving Brebeuf Jesuit as she transitions to her new opportunity this summer.
We have been blessed to have Jen serve our community for 14 years as Educational Technology Coordinator, Director of Faculty Development, and Assistant Principal. She also served as Department Chair of Information Systems and Services, led our Magis Faculty/Staff Ignatian Formation program, and served as Brebeuf's Corporate Test Coordinator and Federal Title Funding Coordinator.
In his announcement, Greg VanSlambrook said, "I'm proud on behalf of Brebeuf that the Jesuit Province has recognized her gifts and that she has this opportunity to guide the Jesuit educational mission on a larger scale. Please join me in congratulating Jen!"
In her new role, Jen will support and guide all 23 Jesuit K-12 schools across the Midwest. She will coordinate the network's professional development and collaboration opportunities, including various JSN conferences and meetings. On behalf of the Provincial, she will also guide the essential sponsorship review process for schools, travel to school campuses and the Chicago office frequently, and support the schools with anything and everything that comes up.
Her husband George, children Linnie '17 and Will '23, and cats Toast and Butter will still be in familiar surroundings, as Jen's new leadership role allows her to remain in Indianapolis. While we will miss her and her unwavering dedication to our school, we are so excited to wish her well on the next step of her journey. Congratulations and thank you, Jen.

CANNONBALL DAY
Today marks the 500th anniversary of the day St. Ignatius was hit in the leg by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona, an event that would ultimately give rise to the Ignatian method of discernment of spirits, the Spiritual Exercises, and to the Society of Jesus and all its works -- including Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School. Today also marks the beginning of an Ignatian Year that will continue until July 31, 2022. During this time the Society of Jesus worldwide, and the entire Ignatian family including Brebeuf Jesuit, will celebrate the spiritual journey of St. Ignatius from the 500th anniversary of his conversion in 1521 to his canonization in 1622.
The text used at school this morning during our morning prayer came from a recent article in America by Jean Luc Enyegue, a Jesuit priest from Cameroon who is the director of the Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa, which is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The full text of the article can be found here. It is worth a read and might be a good way to begin the Ignatian Year.
The conversion of St. Ignatius did not occur all at once, but being struck by that cannonball on May 20, 1521 stopped him in his tracks and forced him to pause and consider his life and his future. Perhaps there have been ways in which we have been stopped in our tracks this past year. As we emerge from the pandemic let's be sure to take some time to take stock of what we have experienced and what we have learned. As we consider where we have been and our dreams for the future, let's be attentive to the movements of our spirits. To what are we being called? Is there anything we are being prompted to leave behind us?
For the class of 2021 our prayers go with you. For those of us who will remain, we will take some time this year to celebrate the events of the life of St. Ignatius, drawing from them inspiration and the grace to come to hear more clearly our particular call to discover and cultivate the fullness of our God-given talents as a responsibility and as an act of worship.
With blessings to all for the year to come,
Fr. Bill Verbryke, S.J., President
Fr. Christopher Johnson, S.J., VP for Mission & Identity

BREBEUF JESUIT ARROW STORY OF THE WEEK
Brebeuf Clubs Discuss Morality and Politics Regarding Abortion
Written by Caroline Donahue '23 News and Features Editor
Access to abortion has been a topic both widely criticized and supported by members of our nation for years. Roe v. Wade deemed abortion constitutionally protected in 1973, therefore legal in all U.S states, but since the decision, pro-life groups have emerged to advocate against that ruling. One branch has even reached Brebeuf Jesuit to create the “Right to Life Club.” The group sat down on April 28 with the Brebeuf Young Democrats club and Young Republicans to discuss opinions, arguments, and the general morality of abortion.
