Daniel Woods
The Addison Group
I recieved a Bachelor’s of Landscape Architecture degree from Mississippi State University. I have been in Nashville for 18 years and started my company, The Addison Group, in 2012. We are a Landscape Architecture firm focused primarily on residential, designing high end outdoor spaces including pools, outdoor living, putting greens, landscape. We like working with people, which is why the residential world has been so rewarding for us. There are a total of 9 people in our office. Additionally, I have 15+ years experience in real estate development, handling everything from master planning - to entitlement - to infrastructure management, throughout Williamson County and Davidson County.
I have been married 20+ years to my wonderful wife, Melia. Together, we have 3 children (Braden-19, Addison-16, Emerie-9). My oldest son is a college pitcher at Letourneau University in Longview, TX. My middle daughter is planning to attend Mississippi State University (my alma mater). And my daughter Emerie is a very talented gymnast.
What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others?
The metric I lean on quite a bit for me, personally, is “life balance.” I try to stay focused on making every part of my life be the best it can be, without forcing another piece of life to suffer (family, business, health, etc). I don’t always succeed, but that’s what I try to fall back on.
Best business book you’ve ever read?
Admittedly, I don’t read as much as I should! It might be cliché at this point, but I always enjoyed the lessons in Rich Dad/Poor Dad.
One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about?
We are a company that has grown quite a bit in the past 3 years. I’ve made the mistake of trying to take on too much as the owner, and not delegating. So, my ability to assist clients became diluted the busier we were, because I was missing details. I’m learning to delegate more and in a strategic way.
How do you de-stress after a particularly hard day?
I try to exercise 45 minutes a day at the end of the work day. Even if it’s just a walk. That’s helped my late day energy levels tremendously.
What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this?
I’m coming up on 50 pounds of weight loss in the last 12 months (47.5 pounds currently). It’s been a slow pace of about 4 pounds a month, but has been so rewarding to see results from the hard work. Little by little.
What EO benefit has been most valuable to you?
I’m VERY excited about my forum for MANY reasons. But seeing my “blind spots” through the experience of other EO members seems to be the most valuable benefit for me so far. I love that there are so many talented entrepreneurs in this group from various industries, but there’s still commonality in the struggles as well as the successes.
Any exciting plans for this winter?
About mid-December, I’ll plan to slowly shut things down. We’ll spend some time in Orlando with the family, escape the cold, and enjoy Hollywood Studios and Universal.
