| During the hot humid summers of the past, when epidemics used to be common, boisterous festivals provided a way to shake off bad feelings. Some other summer festivals were held to welcome the spirits of ancestors coming to visit this world. The latest issue of Niponica goes into details about the many festivals held in Japan throughout the year, and teaches you about the culture and customs surrounding many of the most popular festivals in Japan.

| A Message from the Consul General
June was a vibrant month for Florida-Japan relations especially in the Tampa area.
On June 13, the Consulate organized the inaugural Japan-Tampa Business Forum. It featured presentations by myself and the five leading technology/engineering companies from Japan, namely, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and NEC. It was great to have local State Representatives, Commissioners and business leaders from the Greater Tampa Bay Area. The second forum featuring the Japanese companies will be organized on July 31 at PortMiami.
On June 28, the Consulate organized JUMP (Japan-U.S. Military Program) event in Tampa. It was attended by Major General Dorman and about 100 US service members and families who were stationed at US bases in Japan, along with other friends of Japan in the area. It was an occasion to renew our friendship and to reaffirm the importance of our longstanding alliance.
Both events were possible thanks to the cooperation of Port Tampa Bay. I am deeply grateful to Port CEO Paul Anderson and his staff for their cooperation.
On June 20th, Consulate representatives attended "Hands & Earth: Six Perspectives on Japanese Contemporary Ceramics" at University of Miami Lowe Art Museum. The exhibit featured important works by Japanese ceramic artists during the last 80 years. The exhibit will be on display until September 23. Ceramic enthusiasts must visit it.
One sad news: I will be moving on to Geneva in early August to assume my new post as the Ambassador / Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations & Chief of the Consulate of Japan. I hope to see you before my departure.
