As we wrap up the month of January this week, many folks are wrapping up Dry January or Damp January too. Many of you who participated this year are probably starting to think, "what now?"
If this sounds like you and you are currently in the process of exploring your relationship with alcohol, you are not alone! Many Dry January participants report experiencing lasting effects from the month, including sleeping better, having more energy, concentrating better, and saving more money. If these things are important to you, it may be time to explore the sober curious movement. Sober curiosity is a movement that emphasizes conscious choice and reflection regarding your relationship with alcohol.
If you choose to re-evaluate your relationship with alcohol, here are some tips:
- Set achievable and realistic goals for yourself (i.e., choose specific days, weeks, or months to stay sober)
- Plan ahead and choose when you will drink (i.e., certain social situations or setting a limit)
- Explore other hobbies (i.e., consider hobbies that don't require/encourage you to drink)
- Reach out for support (i.e., let your close support system know what your goals are and ask them for support)
If you do choose to drink, remember to take precautions to reduce your risk:
- Plan ahead and find a buddy to stick with while you drink
- Eat a meal high in protein before and during drinking
- Set a plan for how you'll get home
- Don't leave your drink unattended, and watch your drink being poured
