ADULT LEARNING
"When I look at the immense range of fall offerings for Adult learning, I hope that like me, you feel hopeful and inspired to dive into an immense world of learning this fall—from honing your Hebrew speaking skills, to learning about leadership in the Bible, to thinking about thought provoking leaders, there is room for all learners at the Hebrew College adult learning table." — Sara Brown, Director of Adult Learning
TEEN LEARNING
"I am impressed by the resiliency, creativity, and passion of our teens. From their commitment to racial and environmental justice to their interest in Jewish civic engagement, Modern Hebrew, and creative explorations of Talmud and Midrash, the teens, families, and educators at the heart of our teen programs give me hope. In a time of painful isolation, our teens are finding every way to connect—to friends, to Jewish learning, and to a vision of a more whole and just world." — Rabbi Laura Bellows, Director of Teen Learning

Finding Hope (Tikvah) in Jewish Learning
We have so many reasons to be hopeful in this moment. Just look at how Jewish learning is thriving thanks to your thirst for knowledge, community, and connection. When we needed to pause our in-person learning, you stuck with us and each other—learning together in our Hebrew Language adult, young-adult, and teen programs, and Hebrew language Ulpan classes. We also expanded our learning community outside of Massachusetts, welcoming students from across the country into these online courses.
Since classes filled so quickly—and you told us you wanted to keep the momentum going—two anonymous donors stepped forward to support a series of summer online community learning opportunities. Those courses quickly filled up too. For the first time, we also ran summer teen courses through our Prozdor, Jewish Teen Foundation of Greater Boston (JTFGB), and the new Teen Beit Midrash program. Hope is this kind of learning community—full of curiosity, continuity, and thirst for a strong Jewish future. Hope is the ongoing support Hebrew College receives from CJP to keep these programs alive and affordable.
As I begin my new role at Hebrew College as Vice President of Community Education, I am delighted to be working with our innovative Adult Learning and Teen Learning directors, Sara Brown and Rabbi Laura Bellows`18, to bring even more hope, joy and discovery to our programs.
As we prepare for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, please know that we at Hebrew College remain hopeful, committed, and excited about the Jewish community, lifelong learning, and our Jewish future. Thank you for your contribution to enacting our mission.
With blessings of hope,

Learning Hebrew to Explore Israel Experiencing hope and rediscovery through Ulpan
By Charles Lin Hebrew College Ulpan "I started Hebrew College Ulpan because I wanted to become more familiar with how to read the Hebrew Alphabet. I had visited Israel quite a few times for work or to visit friends, and while everyone speaks English there, I always feel it’s a visitor’s responsibility to know the basics. I also work in high tech, and there are a lot of startups in Tel Aviv, so I thought it might be useful to know the language."

Teen Learning Renaissance Building hope & strength for Jewish teen leadership
What do teens want? To make their own choices. This fall, Teen Learning at Hebrew College will offer six options that allow teens to choose experiences that fit their unique passions, backgrounds, and schedules.
“We are excited to offer teens what they asked for—a robust menu of diverse learning options, led by dynamic and warm faculty, scholars, and practitioners, where teens can craft their own Jewish learning experiences and explore,” says Rabbi Laura Bellows, Director of Prozdor and Teen Learning.

Maintaining Hope: Learning Together from a Distance
As colleges and universities across the country braced for the impact of remote learning, we found our faculty and staff, ready, willing, and able to make the shift. Community Education classes quickly moved online. Faculty adapted their curricula and their pedagogies to their new Zoom classrooms for Hebrew College’s more than 1,500 community adult and teen learners at that time.
Here is some of their feedback:
“Our mussar group is continuing to meet on Zoom, and it’s meant so much to be able to connect and process during these uncertain and unprecedented times. The mussar perspective, too, is also extremely helpful in offering us a lens through which to understand what we are going through and to handle it as best as we can." (Open Circle Jewish Learning student)
"Completing this course online was so beneficial. Being able to attend to our infant during this class while being online made it possible. (Parenting Through a Jewish Lens student)
“My favorite thing was still getting to see my classmates on Zoom twice a week! It gave me something to look forward to.” (Ulpan student)
We remain hopeful that through study, connection, and support for each other, we will strengthen our shared learning community together. Thank you for continuing your learning journey with us!
