A current counseling student, Misty Abulimen was awarded the highly competitive NBCC Minority Fellowship in Addictions Counseling! Misty currently works as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and is continuing her education at SHSU to become a Licensed Professional Counselor one day.

A graduate of the PhD Counselor Education program, Dr. Adrian Lira, was appointed to the National Board of Certified Counselors. His full-time job is as the Director of Professional Development at the internationally renown Menninger Clinic. He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Our faculty member, Dr. Kathleen Rice has long served on the NBCC board of directors as well.

| An alumna of the Ph.D. Counselor Education program, Dr. Angie Cartwright, formerly served as the Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Success at University of North Texas. This year, she began a two-year appointment as the interim Dean of the UNT College of Education.

Dr. Jennifer Stover, graduate of the PhD Counselor Education program and current tenure-track Assistant Professor in the department was selected by the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors to be part of the highly selective ACES Grant Academy. Dr. Stover is also a former winner of the NBCC Minority Fellowship.

Gabriella Chapa Herrera, one of our doctoral students, was selected as the presidential emerging leader for the Texas Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling, under Dr. Leigh Holman’s mentorship in her role as president of TAARC. Gabriella is a seasoned (20+ year professional) counselor and educator serving as a Threat Assessment professional in Pasadena schools.

Adriana Gutierrez, a PhD counselor education doctoral candidate at SHSU, was named the co-chair of the ACES Bilingual Interest Network. In this role she was chosen to present as the lead panel member at the bi-annual national ACES conference earlier this month on preparation and supervision of bilingual counselors to serve the largest population of Spanish-speaking individuals outside of Mexico.

Dr. Ricardo Montelongo attended the JCT Conference on Curriculum Theory & Classroom Practice October 17-18 at the Bergamo Center located in Dayton, OH. He presented a paper titled "Camino Pedagogy: Understanding Pilgrimage as a Teaching "Force." This is one of three papers in progress describing how his recent Camino de Santiago hikes in France, Portugal, and Spain have influenced his faculty identity & teaching. He is currently exploring pilgrimage studies as applied to higher education administration & leadership.

Dr. Baburhan Uzum has been selected to serve as Guest Editor for a special issue of TESOL Journal, one of the flagship journals of the TESOL International Association. The upcoming issue, titled “Virtual Intercultural Exchange in TESOL Teacher Education,” will spotlight innovative research and practice advancing global collaboration in language teacher education.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be committed to teaching in the Texas public school system in either a Title 1 or majority economically disadvantaged school or in a priority subject area (math, science, special education, or bilingual). Applicants must also exemplify the knowledge, skills, and values listed below. Preference is given to Texas residents.
