The Anti-Racism Essay Project
For its launch, See infra online features a special digital edition of St. John’s Law magazine: The Anti-Racism Essay Project—a compilation of opinion pieces contributed by St. John's Law students, alumni, faculty, and administrators in response to the June Dialogue Day’s call to action:

Our goal is to offer a collection of perspectives that, individually and collectively, moves our Law School, our community, and our profession forward in solidarity with our Black students, alumni, and colleagues as we work to be actively anti-racist and to combat injustice in all its forms.

In the Media/In the Field
Center for International and Comparative Law Co-Director and Professor Christopher J. Borgen offers his latest take on legal questions animated by military space activities at Articles of War, a publication of the Lieber Institute for Law & Land Warfare at West Point.

Professor Marc O. DeGirolami, co-director of our Center for Law and Religion, closed out September with a responsive essay on “Traditionalist Originalism” for Law & Liberty.

Professor Robin A. Boyle Laisure is contributing a chapter to Generations in American Politics (University of Michigan Press), which is slated for Fall 2021 publication. She will present her work for the book at the Northeastern Political Science Association virtual conference.

It's been a busy stretch for Professor Christine Lazaro, who heads our in-house Securities Arbitration Clinic. She moderated a webinar on the fundamentals of FINRA arbitration and a panel on handling online mediation. She also presented on hot issues in securities arbitration for 2021, and co-authored an article on telephonic mediation of small claims.

University World News quoted Professor Rosemary C. Salomone in a story about Moroccan universities allowing students to choose between remote and in-person learning this semester.

Faculty Workshop Series
Our annual Hon. Edward D. Re Faculty Workshop Series brings scholars from across the country together to discuss their current research and receive feedback on their works-in-progress from our faculty.

Organized by Associate Dean for Faculty Scholarship Eva E. Subotnik, this year’s Workshop Series features scholarship related to race, racism, and anti-racism across a host of domains. The presenters will focus on racial justice and racial empowerment issues—particularly those most affecting, experienced by, or relevant to Black Americans.

First Friday Book Club
Join us online for our new First Friday Book Club. Led by Professors Cheryl L. Wade and Sheldon A. Evans, we’ll challenge preconceived notions and inspire newfound depth in understanding as we discuss books by African American authors that explore some of the most impactful issues of our time, including:

• Racial justice
• Racial awareness
• Social change

With unique insight into the racial caste system suffered in America and across the African Diaspora, and through their literary prowess, the authors express messages to the Black community and to those in power that seek to understand the Black experience and how to change it.

STUDENT SUCCESS

Taking the Lead
The student-run Coalition for Social Justice (CSJ) continues to expand its vital anti-racism work, a leadership role that was in the spotlight during our June Dialogue Day.

In early September, the organization published the Contract, formally the St. John's University School of Law Student Organization Commitment to Racial Justice and Solidarity with Marginalized Communities. The document memorializes participating student organizations’ commitments to a general set of obligations, including organizational changes. It also shares each group’s pledge to individual, specifically tailored, year-to-year obligations.

Later that month, the CSJ launched its new website, sjucsj.org. With robust features, including a blog and a forum for dialogue, the site furthers the organization’s mission of providing an open and inclusive platform and outlet for St. John’s Law students and others to learn about, and advocate for, the broad spectrum of social justice issues.

Mission Driven
Five St. John's Law students spent a formative summer working as TAs in the (fully remote) Ron Brown Prep Program, the award-winning pipeline initiative of our Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights.
