ATLANTA -- "The revised CDC guidance reflecting the latest science on physical distance between students in classrooms is a small change that will allow more students in the classroom when ‘mask use is universal’. The studies were conducted in classrooms where previous guidance was not being fully followed due to the challenge of 6 feet of physical distancing, we are concerned that reducing the recommendation to 3 feet will result in no physical distancing in some classrooms.
The CDC has made clear that the correct and consistent wearing of face coverings is key to the ability to reduce transmission of COVID19 in our schools so we can safely provide in person instruction. As we move toward more educators being vaccinated, we urge everyone to continue to implement the full range of mitigation strategies with fidelity – universal facemasks, appropriate physical distancing, appropriate cleaning and hygiene, improved ventilation, and isolation, testing, and contract tracing when necessary.
As educators, we want nothing more than to be with our students for in person instruction, however, we must continue to prioritize their physical, social and emotional, as well as academic well-being."
