EDUCAUSE Inclusive Language Guide

Bookmark this! EDUCAUSE has put together this set of guidelines to help us use language inclusively in the classroom. These guidelines are based on a set of stated principles underpinning changes being proposed to the established lexicon. Additional resources are provided to uncover and understand the harm that language can cause. This is a living document, and users are encouraged to submit suggestions.

Upcoming -- Updates to Blackboard

There are two updates to Blackboard coming soon.

First, Blackboard’s landing page is getting a new look over the weekend of May 19-20th. GWIT will be upgrading our version of Blackboard from Learn to Ultra.

How will this impact your courses? It won’t. For now, only the landing page will feature the new look and feel. Currently there is no timeline for converting courses.

Second, around the same time, IT will enable two-factor authentication to Blackboard to improve security for all GW users.

IMPACT has been beta testing Blackboard Ultra, keeping in mind the unique needs of our Health Sciences faculty and students. We are always happy to answer questions, brainstorm, and troubleshoot. Feel free to contact us at any point.

Captioning for Live Virtual Events

It’s graduation season and with this time of year comes events. For events livestreamed to a virtual audience it’s important to provide captions. These days automatic captions can be a low cost and easy solution, but there is also the choice to hire a human captioner.

When considering whether to use automatic captioning versus a human captioner for an event, it is important to take into account whether the event will include jargon and proper names, as these can impact the effectiveness of the captioning. Additionally, it is crucial to consider the audience experience and the potential negative impact of misspellings or misinterpretations on your message.

GW recommends the vendor AI Live for live event captioning. Costs start at $180/hr and should be booked at least a week in advance. If you have any questions, please reach out to us.
