Dietary lipids provide high-density energy to dairy cows, primarily boosting milk production and reproductive performance. Microbes in the rumen tend to turn unsaturated fatty acids into saturated fatty acids through a process called biohydrogenation. Later, the fatty acids go to the small intestine for absorption. Managing this fat intake within specific thresholds prevents negative rumen fermentation impacts while supporting cows through early lactation energy deficits.

Finding and keeping good employees is one of the biggest challenges facing today’s farm businesses. To help farm managers build stronger workplaces and develop effective leadership skills, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension is offering a new cohort of its online Becoming the Employer of Choice course which will run Sept. 1-25, 2026.

Raising dairy calves and replacement heifers is a major expense for Wisconsin dairies; tracking these costs and benchmarking against peers supports better management decisions. Periodically, Wisconsin Extension Educators have collected farm level data to track these costs. UW-Madison Extension educators invite you to take a biosecurity survey to determine what dairy producers already know about biosecurity, and what and how they would like to learn more. The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete.
