| Annual Computational Linguistics Competition Sees Growing Participation |
Hongchen Wu and Kyoko Masuda in the School of Modern Languages recently hosted the 19th North American Computational Linguistics Open Competition. This marks the fourth year Georgia Tech has served as a university site for the national event, which challenges middle and high school students to solve complex linguistics puzzles in a competitive setting.

CFP by Jan. 31: The Future of Humanities at Tech |
The chairs of the Schools of History and Sociology; Literature, Media and Communication; Modern Languages; and Public Policy invite you to a special event on the Humanities at Georgia Tech, on Friday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Tech Square Research Building Auditorium.
This event will highlight the humanities at Tech and include workshops with external experts on potential future collaborative work. The morning will feature up to sixteen 5-minute lightning-round presentations by faculty on their humanities research.
If you would like to present a 5-minute lightning talk, please submit a 300-word prospectus to John Lyon by Friday, Jan. 31. Presentations should highlight (1) major question(s) driving your research, (2) findings and (3) connection to the humanities, and be accessible to a broad audience.

Laura Taylor (Economics) participated in an invitation-only White House Roundtable to discuss a national strategy to develop statistics for environmental-economic decisions and their intersection with the existing National Economic Accounts. Taylor was also the keynote speaker for the “Women in Leadership” series at Resources for the Future, the oldest think tank of its kind and one of the top ranked institutions in environmental economics.

Public policy Ph.D. student Yifan Liu, along with Georgia Tech Ph.D. students Viswa Sri Rupa Anne and Gulam Kibria, received a best paper award at the 2025 Transportation Research Board conference for their paper, "Effectiveness of Health and Environmental Provision to Promote Sustainable Travel Modes."

Faculty, school chairs, school RPT chairs, and RPT administrators are invited to attend. The virtual workshops will be recorded and posted on the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts website after each session (campus or VPN connection required).

The 2025 recipient is María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan political leader, industrial engineer, and human rights advocate. The award recognizes individuals who, by standing up for moral principles at great personal risk, have made a significant impact on society.
