The CAAP connection
Building Paths out of Poverty in our Communities Together
Dear Member Agencies and Partners,

As I close on my first full month of serving CAAP’s member Agencies, I reflect on the continued conversations with Agency leadership.  Listening to your insights and struggles, I am awestruck by the amazing work that our Agencies are doing here in Pennsylvania.  On behalf of our team here at CAAP, thank you for all that you do.

Being February, it’s vital that we recognize and celebrate Black History Month, taking special note of this year’s theme: Black Health and Wellness.  This is particularly noteworthy as we look at how the pandemic has disproportionately affected minority communities and placed unique burdens on black health care professionals.  I encourage you to visit the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), at the very least, to learn more about this theme and to potentially attend a two-part program to better understand African American contributions to medical discoveries and public health.

Additionally, I want to recognize that taking a moment to attend virtual workshops is hard, particularly as many of you face the continued challenge of being short-staffed.  However, as someone reminded me today, it is important we take time for ourselves, breathe, and sharpen the tools in our toolbelt.  Keep growing and expanding your thinking.  And in that vein, we sincerely hope you can take a few moments to join us at even a portion of our DEI Summit and/or the Prosper Together Webinar Series

Should you have a suggestion about future training, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us here at CAAP.  No idea is too big or too small!  I look forward to continuing to meet more of you and thank you again.

Stay Healthy,

Prosper Together

Book of the Month

Four Hundred Souls
Edited & Assembled by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain
Assembled as a "community" of history, the story begins in 1619—a year before the Mayflower — when the White Lion disgorges “some 20-and-odd Negroes” onto the shores of Virginia, inaugurating the African presence in what would become the United States. Four Hundred Souls is a unique one-volume “community” history of African Americans. It's an assembly of ninety brilliant writers, each of whom takes on a five-year period of that four-hundred-year span.  Read more or purchase the book online.

The Second Harvest Food Bank and Community Seed Farm Ensure Access to Food

Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, Inc. helped to create The Second Harvest network of 200+ community partners that provide food pantries, meal centers, shelters, school and senior living centers that serve 500 families each month.  It is now a staple of the community.  Additionally, a newer partnership with Promise Neighborhoods resulted in a 1/8-acre Seed Farm offering a place of community, sharing meals, dancing, and making music.  The story is about food and food apartheid, but the garden is about life.  Read the full stories about both community initiatives.
