Special Collections acquires Diary of American polar explorer and SHU alumnus Roy Fitzimmons, Physics '37
Special Collections and the Gallery has received an exciting new addition: the diary of American polar explorer Roy Fitzimmons. Fitzimmons received his degree in physics from Seton Hall in 1937 and trained in Magnetometry at the Carnegie Institute. He served as the Geophysicist and Magnetologist on the MacGregor Arctic Expedition from July 1, 1937 – October 4, 1938. The goals of the expedition were to conduct a magnetic survey, collect weather data, photograph the aurora borealis and study its effects upon radio transmission, and to explore the area northwest of Ellesmere Island. The diary is of particular historical significance, because unlike other polar expeditions of the era, the MacGregor expedition was not widely documented. Please contact archives@shu.edu for more information.
