We are excited to share with you some Hockaday highlights!
It is hard to believe that February is upon us. Though many across the country are feeling the deep freeze, we are just getting warmed up! Hockaday is busy with activity and we’d love to share a glimpse into campus life.
In the Lower School, our prekindergarten classes recently got to read books with children’s author Chris Barton. In kindergarten, the girls are working on memorizing poetry, counting money, and solving math word problems. Many of our Lower School students in all grades participated in the Lunar New Year celebration today with performances and New Year greetings in various languages. All of the students in the Lower School are looking forward to the 100th day of school on February 13 when they will wear homemade t-shirts with 100 items glued or sewn on to the t-shirt. It’s time to get creative!
The whole school enjoyed a free dress day last week to celebrate our annual benefit and current parent, DJ Poison Ivy, played some fun tunes at lunch. Check out cute photos and a video on our Instagram page. Proceeds from the benefit go toward the new Ann Graves Child Development Center which allows our faculty and staff to have childcare on the Hockaday campus.
Middle Schoolers recently selected their electives for the spring semester, among others, they have choices like Recyclable Runway, Film, Stars Club, Crafting, or a new fitness class called Move. Our eighth graders just completed their first ever semester exams, and one of our seventh graders will advance to the National Geography Bee contest after coming in first place!
In the Upper School, many of our girls just participated in the American Mathematics Competition which is America’s longest running and most prestigious math contest. Our college counselors recently led a resume writing workshop for our girls, which is one of many programs they offer throughout the year. Last weekend Upper School students spent their Saturday installing the colorful interior walls of the Hockaday Habitat for Humanity house that were painted by all students during our recent Day of Service. Finally, this weekend marks the opening of the Upper School production of Once Upon A Mattress, a phenomenal show! There is a lot happening at Hockaday, and we know you are busy too. You may review your checklist via the parent portal at any time to make sure all teacher recommendation forms, parent and student questionnaires, and transcripts have been received. Please enjoy a few more stories and video below.
All my best,

Fusing Literature, and Service

Our English Department Chair teaches a senior Contemporary American Literature class and they are co-studying Lynn Nottage’s play Sweat with a senior class from Thomas Jefferson High School. This project is one example of the many curricular initiatives woven into the Hockaday Institute for Social Impact. Twice last week the classes met to discuss the play, and yesterday they welcomed one of the Dallas Theater Center actors from the play to speak to the students. The classes ventured to Dallas Theater Center’s Kalita Humphreys Theater for a workshop on the play and had the opportunity to stay for the performance. Chinese Club Celebrates the New Year

Last week, girls from the Chinese Club and Asian Student Association celebrated the Chinese New Year. They shared dumplings and rice cakes, learned how to use chopsticks properly, and listened to the most popular Chinese songs. On Tuesday, girls in the AP Chinese class performed a traditional Lion Dance for a Chinese New Year Assembly at St. Mark's and today, girls in the AP Chinese and Chinese III class performed for the Hockaday Lower School girls. Space Daisies: A Note from a Middle School Robotics Team

"This year, the theme was Into Orbit. We were challenged to design a solution to real-life problems that astronauts face in space. We also have to design, build, and program a robot to complete missions on the board.
Astronauts cannot feel through their gloves when they are working in space. In addition, due to the pressure in the gloves, their fingernails can fall off. We came up with a solution, Buzz Gloves. Buzz Gloves are gloves that have haptic sensors inside. Each time an astronaut would perform a task in space, it would buzz and let them feel through their astronaut gloves. More information is on our website. We would really appreciate if you read through it! Please leave a comment. https://cdong24.wixsite.com/space-daisies. Thank you from the Space Daisies!"

Hockaday Hosts Interscholastic Colloquium

Next week, we are hosting the Interscholastic Colloquium at Hockaday. Upper School students from Hockaday will discuss Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street with peers from other schools. Ms. Cisneros will deliver a keynote speech to 185 students and faculty from ten peer schools around Dallas and then join a small group of Hockaday girls for lunch. In addition to the time with Ms. Cisneros, 20 Hockaday girls have been chosen by a panel of (non-Hockaday) faculty readers to present their own work before their peers at the Colloquium. Read more about the Colloquium here.
