Denison mourns the loss of Professor David O. Woodyard ’54
It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Professor David O. Woodyard ’54, a constant on Denison’s campus for more than six decades. Professor Woodyard dedicated his career to his students and the intersection of faith, ethics, and social responsibility. He served as dean of the chapel, chair of the religion department, chaired key committees, and was twice elected chair of the faculty. Beyond the classroom, Woodyard authored 10 books exploring human identity, social justice, and theological reflection.
| |
Professor Woodyard changed the lives of countless students and helped generations of faculty and staff learn what it means to be a Denisonian.
A memorial service celebrating the life of David O. Woodyard will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 8, in Swasey Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either of these important causes: The Mr. & Mrs. W.C. Woodyard Memorial Scholarship fund, which provides financial support for Denison University students. Visit denison.edu/woodyard to make a contribution. Checks may be mailed to Denison University PO Box 2007, Mount Vernon, OH 43050-7207. The Food Pantry Network of Licking County, a private non-profit organization feeding our neighbors facing food insecurity for more than 40 years. Checks made out to Food Pantry Network of Licking County can be sent to 1035 Brice Street, Newark, OH 43055.

Priorities in action: volunteers
Thank you, volunteers!
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re proud to count thousands of alums as volunteers! Denison thrives on connection, and our volunteers are at the heart of making that happen. Whether it is through planning regional events like Denison Everywhere or an immersive on-campus experience like Reunion or ReMix, mentoring students or recent graduates, hosting an intern or serving as an Alumni Advisory Board member, Denisonians give back in ways that align with their passions and expand upon the university’s mission of lifelong learning, leadership, and service. Thank you for all you do to continue to help Denison thrive!

Hire a Denison micro-intern at no cost!
Denison is excited to offer alums a unique way to engage with current students by hosting a Summer 2025 Micro-Internship! These short-term (40-hour), remote, paid (by Denison!), professional projects allow students to showcase their skills, explore career paths, and expand their networks by connecting with alums like you. Plus, they provide you with immediate support and a potential pipeline for future talent at no cost to your organization.
Tiffani Barletta ’02, a recent project host, shared, “The hiring process was smooth and easy, with responsive support to clarify any questions. Our student was professional, reliable, and eager to learn, which positively impacted her work. Bringing in new talent is a great opportunity to introduce fresh perspectives. Providing clear goals and guidance helps make the experience rewarding for both the student and the employer.”
Don’t miss this chance to connect with talented Denisonians! Post your project on our website.
