This is the last regular issue of The Powder Blue this semester. But don’t worry, we can’t just quit you like that! We’ll send one issue of The Powder Blue in December and one in January. In these issues, we want to meet Ole Miss students like you. If you’re interested in being featured in one of these issues or want to nominate someone to be featured, here’s what we’re doing:
We’ll ask you the following (optional) questions:
- What’s your name, hometown and major?
- Why did you come to Ole Miss?
- What has surprised you the most about being in college?
- What kind of life do you want to create for yourself when you leave Ole Miss?
- What would you tell someone who’s thinking about coming to Ole Miss?
And then we’ll ask you to send in a photo of yourself. You don’t have to have certain accomplishments or a crazy story either – we’re interested in everyone! Email thepowderblue@olemiss.edu with your name or your nomination because we’re going to miss all your faces.

When someone says “Are we hugging??”

Thanksgiving break is exactly what we all deserve right now, but it might not be the MOST relaxing Thanksgiving ever. It may be up to you to have “the talk” with your family about COVID precautions. Before you make your plans, here’s some guidance from UM experts about safe traveling and gathering.

But if you have questions or concerns about your finals, like what to do if you have too many finals on one day, or if you’re worried you might be sick, here are some final exam FAQs
You can also make an appointment to use a space at the Testing Center at the Jackson Avenue Center to take remotely-proctored finals, if you want to make sure you can take your remote final in a quiet environment with a secure internet connection. Make an appointment here.

Everyone say what they’re thankful for

The winners of the Thanksgiving food poll are below, so this is basically the ideal Ole Miss spread. But if you have something else to say about this, you can vote in the "Who You Callin' a Side Dish Challenge" on the Ole Miss Twitter. Happy Thanksgiving!! 🦃

If you don’t really cook, but want to impress everyone at Thanksgiving with the fact that you cooked, here are some of the easiest dishes to make, taken from our Thanksgiving poll winners.

Green bean casserole from the soup mix 💯
Find a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish and stir in 1 can of Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup, 1/2 cup milk, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 dash of black pepper, 2/3 cups of French's French Fried Onions and 2 14.5-ounce cans of green beans (make sure you drain them first). Bake it at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, then stir it and sprinkle the top with the rest of the onions that were in the package. Bake all that again for 5 minutes, still at 350º.

Pumpkin pie: pre-made pie crust, canned pumpkin and like, half your attention
Mix 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 3/4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice in a big bowl, then add 2 eggs and beat. Stir in one 15-ounce can of pumpkin and one 12-ounce can of evaporated milk, mix it up and pour it into a pre-made pie crust, the one that comes in the aluminum tin. Bake at 425° for 15 minutes, then turn the oven down to 350° and bake for another 40 to 50 minutes or until the center is done.

Homemade cranberry sauce: three ingredients
Pour 1 cup of orange juice into a medium saucepan and turn it to medium heat. Dissolve 1 cup of sugar in the OJ and then stir in 1 12-ounce package of fresh cranberries. Keep cooking and stirring until the cranberries start to pop, which is about 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and pour it into a nice bowl. The sauce will thicken while it cools down.

You deserve all the rest after this semester, but two months is a long time. Once you’ve (safely) seen your family, you can use this time to focus on things that you don’t always have time for during regular classes, like…
🎒Take more classes! There’s still time to register for Wintersession.
💵 Work! Find a safe way to make some money. If regular places aren’t hiring, think outside the box. Do you have a service you can offer people? Reach out to people you know and tell them what you can do!
💛 Serve! There are lots of people and causes who need help right now, and you can get creative about how to safely help someone in your community or your family. Cook or run errands for someone, gather donations or find a cause you can get behind.
📝 Learn! Offer to help someone in a career you’re interested in. It doesn’t have to be anything intense, but almost no one is going to turn down free help and it could mean a lot for your resume. Let them know you’re up for doing anything their business needs.
📚 Read! Read something you love, something you’ve never heard of, something that challenges you. This is basically a cold summer break, so mix some pages in with your Netflix.
🎨 Make! Creative projects take time, and now that you’ve got it, is there anything you’ve been thinking about creating? Go for it and see what happens.

Secure your house or apartment with these tips:
- Tell a trusted neighbor that you’re leaving.
- Take valuables or lock them up in your house.
- Lock windows and doors and close curtains and blinds.
- Check your appliances and thermostat before you leave and unplug holiday lights.
- Make sure packages are going to the right place.
- Get a flu shot (I mean it can’t hurt).
If you’re staying in Oxford, please enjoy living inside a Hallmark movie during the winter holidays. Here are some local holiday events like “Winter Wonderland” and a reverse Christmas parade. Also, please get a flu shot at a pharmacy or clinic in town.
