Vanderbilt-Led NSF Regional I-Corps Program Takes on South by Southwest (SXSW)

The SXSW Ideator Regional I-Corps Program, founded on the Sullivan Family Ideator Program, took a diverse group of participants from the Vanderbilt community—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—and collaborators from our broader Mid-South I-Corps Hub Ecosystem, including the University of Virginia, Tennessee State University, and GEM Fellow participants, to this year’s South by Southwest Festival-a global nexus of creativity and technology.

Peabody student Joanne Ying said, “My team was initially drawn to this project because of its focus on improving sustainability and reducing carbon footprints in a city that we would be calling home until we graduate.” Their client, Larkspur Conservation, is a local nonprofit that aims to use natural burial practices to preserve and restore the land across Tennessee.

Hospital Gown Redesign Exhibit on Display through April 12th
This exhibit is the culmination of HOD Capstone student Tobi Akisanya's fall Internship project which she continued to work into this spring to make this exhibit a reality. The show highlights prototypes from campus and community partners from last year's workshops, a set of finished garment designs inspired by the workshop outcomes, and the input from medical personnel including Ryan Buckley, as well as additional ideas connected to the project.

Launch of Vanderbilt Quantum Initiative
The Wond’ry Quantum Studio (TWQS) oversaw the launch of Vanderbilt Quantum Initiative (VQI), a new student-led organization that will act as a spin-off of The Wond'ry Quantum Studio, and help Vanderbilt continue to establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in the quantum industry. Participants, including students of all levels, and Vanderbilt staff, learned about the objectives of VQI and got to enter a QiskitBlocks gaming contest, which helped establish quantum concepts to newcomers.

Virtual Event - Quantum Computing with Intel Workshop with Dr. Kevin Rasch: Apr. 18
Come join us virtually to learn about the Intel® Quantum SDK, the software development kit for quantum computing. Variational algorithms are some of the most promising workloads for early quantum computing systems. The Intel Quantum SDK targets these “hybrid” algorithms by utilizing its Quantum Runtime to coordinate the flow of data between the classical and quantum logic. Click here to register.

Future Physicians as Advocates: Apr. 13 at Light Hall
You don't have to be a physician or future physician to attend! We all care about homelessness within our community and want to do something about it. Students from our Social Changemakers program will be also be presenting their work, so it is a great way to show your support!
This day-long conference brings together local non-profits, medical professionals, community stakeholders, and aspiring advocates (medical students and undergraduates) at Light Hall on Garland Avenue, to learn from one another and show students the myriad ways in which they can become part of the incredible community working to combat homelessness in Nashville.
One meal will be donated for every participant within the conference (counted via attendance day-of the conference!) Click here to register.

Part Time Position: Mid-South National Science Foundation I-Corps Hub Assistant
The Mid-South Hub Assistant is an individual contributor who will support the day-to-day activities of the Hub Coordinator and will execute tasks such as coordinating microgrant processing, supporting cohort recruitment, organizing training logistics, facilitation activities, and workshops, and coordinating Hub reporting information. The chosen candidate will report to the Hub Director and work closely with all Senior Personnel and the Hub Leadership Team.
This is a part-time, on-site position, working up to 27 hours per week. The position is available for the term life of the grant, which expires in December 2027, with option of renewal.

New Class: Runway Ready Sustainable Fashion as Sculptural Art (ARTS 3891: Selected Topics)
Join Professor Alex Sargent Capps, in the exploration of the connection of the fast fashion industry to our global carbon footprint through figurative sculptural and wearable pieces made from recycled objects and deadstock fabrics. Areas of skill building will include figure drawing, hand and machine sewing, flat pattern drafting and draping, textile identification, and adaptive and sustainable fashion.

The Wond’ry Internship Network (WIN) provides a platform for undergraduate and graduate students from Tennessee-based institutions of higher learning to reach their inner innovator. Students can explore their passions by choosing between a variety of opportunities within one of the many Wond’ry practice areas (Biomedical Innovation, Social Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Innovation Research & Design, Making, the Launch Incubator, and the Wond’ry itself).
