Psychology Professor Christopher Harshaw's Research on Behavioral Effects of Acetaminophen Featured in Scientific Journal
|
University of New Orleans psychology professor Christopher Harshaw’s research on the possible link between a common pain reliever and developmental disorders has been published in the October issue of the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior.
Harshaw was awarded a one-year grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents for the research, which focused on the developmental reaction that mice have to acetaminophen, best known by its popular brand name version, Tylenol.

A group of faculty researchers from the Departments of Biological Sciences and Psychology were awarded a grant from the Louisiana State Board of Regents to develop multidisciplinary research and education in biological energetics. Dr. Bernard Rees (Biological Sciences) is the grant’s Principal Investigator and Drs. Zhengchang Liu and Simon Lailvaux from the Department of Biological Sciences and Drs. Christopher Harshaw and Elliott Beaton from the Department of Psychology are co-Principal Investigators.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences hosted students from New Harmony High School for two days of educational experiences. The high school students toured teaching and research laboratories in the department to learn more about this field of study. Students also participated in a stream table experiment with assistant professor Dr. Madeline Foster-Martinez, to understand how rivers and deltas develop under different influences..

Dr. Elliott Beaton, associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Stress, Cognition, and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) Laboratory, participated in the 22Q Texas 2022 Family Camp and Retreat in San Antonio, Texas. This retreat brings together families affected by chromosome 22q11.2 deletion and related syndromes, which include a myriad of serious medical, socioemotional, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms.

The UNO Physics Club hosted an Observatory Night Open House on November 11th, 2022.
With over 150 members of the public in attendance, guests participated in physics trivia and activities while waiting for a viewing of Jupiter and Saturn from the UNO Observatory.

Congratulations to College of Sciences students nominated for the UNO 2022 Homecoming Court! In their nominations and applications, these students exuded school spirit and pride in their majors in the College of Sciences. Seniors Loandi Cruz (Chemistry and Biology Pre-Medical) and Jacques Janvier (Computer Science) were crowned as Homecoming Queen and King at the Men’s Basketball game on November 12th, the culmination of UNO’s weeklong Homecoming festivities. These students make us #UNOProud!

Graduate student Amanda Kirkland, Department of Biological Sciences, won best student presentation at the 5th International Symposium in a High CO2 World in Lima Peru. Amanda’s presentation titled “Laboratory Experiments Reveal Reef Invertebrates in the Northern Gulf of Mexico are Sensitive to Warming Yet, Can Acclimate to Acidification” was selected out of 75 student presentations.
Amanda is currently a Ph.D. student in the Integrative Biology Program at UNO, with her research focusing on artificial reefs off the coast of Alabama.

Thanks to support from the Department of Computer Science, three undergraduate students participated in the virtual programming for the 2022 Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC). An annual event, GHC is the world’s largest gathering of women in technology and includes inspirational speakers, engaging breakout sessions, and career and networking opportunities.

Undergraduate students in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences’ senior seminar class are challenged to apply their knowledge to find a solution to problems arising in coastal wetlands. The Fall 2022 class successfully designed and constructed two structures to test strategies to enhance sediment capture in Quarantine Bay. We are #UNOProud of their innovation and passion for helping solve issues impacting our local environment.

Dr. Aisha Ali-Gombe has joined LSU’s faculty as an associate professor in the LSU Department of Computer Science & Engineering and the Center for Computation & Technology. She received her Ph.D. in computer science with a concentration in information assurance from UNO. Dr. Ali-Gombe is one of the few Black female cybersecurity researchers with a Ph.D. at a Carnegie-designated research-intensive university.
