RABBINICAL CLASS OF 2026/5786
Hebrew College Ordains Largest Cohort of 16 Rabbis
This past weekend the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College ordained the largest cohort in the two-decade history of the program. This cohort is graduating with a 100% placement rate: these new rabbis will transition into an array of roles across the spectrum of Jewish life, from congregations to college campuses, community engagement to Jewish camping. Our new congregational rabbis will step into Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative, and unaffiliated communities — securing positions across the country, from Atlanta to San Franciso to our own “neighborhood”, enriching the Jewish community of Greater Boston and beyond with their vision and leadership. Rabbi Philip Sherman`13, rabbi at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, offered a blessing for the ordainees: “Today is both an ending and a beginning. You stand at a threshold, rooted in learning and moving toward a world that is waiting for your voice, your courage, and your wisdom.”
In celebration of their ordination, this year's class is hoping to raise $20,000 in scholarship funds to benefit current and future students' rabbinical studies at Hebrew College. We invite you to make a gift in honor of the Class of 2026 or an individual ordainee. Every gift, no matter what size, makes it possible for students to attend Hebrew College.

GRADUATE JEWISH EDUCATION CLASS OF 2026/5786
Newly Empowered Educators Ready to Lead the Field
Hebrew College's graduate programs in education conferred six Master of Jewish Education degrees and three Graduate Certificates. Structured for students who already work in the space, these programs offer pedagogical and content instruction to complement and enrich their professional roles. These educational leaders have been putting their learning into practice from their earliest courses, and we are excited for them to innovate and push the field of Jewish education toward new horizons in Jewish communities across the country. “Think back to a person who first kindled your love of Jewish learning…You will never fully know the good you have done,” said Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld. “This is the nature of your sacred work.”

TAMID OF HEBREW COLLEGE: YOUR HOME FOR ADULT LEARNING
Celebrating a Year of Adult Learning
Last night Hebrew College hosted "Leaders and Learners who Light the Way: A Celebration of Tamid Adult Learning." Capping off another academic year of courses, seminars, lectures, and other creative programming, the evening was a reflection of this wonderful community. Attendees participated in a text study led by Hebrew College Vice President Dr. Susie Tanchel, heard from new and longtime members of the Hebrew College adult learning community, and honored 80 learners who were inducted into the Chai Society, for folks who have completed at least 18 Tamid courses. The evening culminated with a panel discussion about Jewish learning as a lifelong pursuit featuring President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld, CJP President and CEO Rabbi Marc Baker, and Lehrhaus Co-founder and Director Rabbi Charlie Schwartz and moderated by Tanchel. "In the past three years Tamid has expanded significantly in both scope and reach," said Tamid Director Kim Bodemer in her opening remarks. "Our goal is to remain responsive to the times in which we live and the curiosity of our learners."

Sharing the Spirit: The Case of Eldad and Medad

The ancient institution of prophecy addressed an obvious bug in the religious operating system: the problem of unethical religious people. There always have been those who conduct their lives according to the letter of the law, following all G-d’s rites and rituals, and yet they somehow manage to completely miss the spirit in which the law is given. They behave technically within the law, yet still abominably. One can think of countless examples, from ancient times until today. Prophecy attempted to counterbalance this problem.

Rabbi Jane Kanarek Wins the Journal of Jewish Education Article of the Year Award
Hebrew College Dean of Faculty Rabbi Dr. Jane Kanarek’s paper, “Throwing the Talmud Across the Room: Emotions and Cultivation of Subjectivity in Talmud Study” has been honored with the Journal of Jewish Education Article of the Year Award, presented to the article deemed most worthy by an independent panel of judges. Rabbi Kanarek’s essay uses two case studies to examine "the ways that emotions point us toward students’ search for subjectivity as they learn to read, translate, and interpret the Babylonian Talmud." Mazel tov to Rabbi Kanarek! Read the paper...
