Exciting News from Autism Tennessee

Welcome Babs and Bev to Autism Tennessee!

Join us in welcoming our new Executive Director, Babs Tierno and our new Program Manager, Bev Fulkerson. We are so excited to have them on the Autism Tennessee team!
Autism TN has announced the selection of Babs Tierno, M.Ed. as its new executive director.  Babs has Bachelor degrees in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Interdisciplinary Legal Studies from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and her Master’s degree in Education from MTSU. Babs has several years of non-profit experience. Most recently, she served as the Office Manager for the Tennessee Justice Center, a non-profit that advocates for Tennessee families to get needed healthcare. Prior to this, she was the Program Director for Williamson County CASA which advocates for abused and neglected children. Babs lives in Gallatin with her husband and two children.
Bev grew up in Louisville, KY and has called Nashville home since 1981.  She has Bachelor degrees in Behavioral Science and Communications and a Master’s degree in Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.  She has a long-time professional background in counseling, training, marketing and education.  Prior to coming to Autism Tennessee, she was a school administrator for ten years at a nationally-recognized school for learning differences where she worked with students on the spectrum and their families.  Bev lives in East Nashville and joined Autism Tennessee in August of 2015 as the Program Manager.

EDUCATION

Adult Orientation - Thursday, August 20, 2015

Autism Tennessee’s Adult Orientations are two-hour informational sessions about autism spectrum disorders conducted by an autism specialist and an adult with autism.  This Orientation is for adults who have a diagnosis of autism and those who suspect that they may have autism.  This Orientation is most helpful for individuals seeking resources and support in order to understand and manage their autism diagnosis as well as those who want to connect to others in the autism community.

Second Helping Orientation - Thursday, August 20, 2015
As a follow-up to our bi-monthly Autism Orientation, Autism Tennessee is happy to provide a Second Helping Orientation series. This event goes more in depth about what we do not have time to cover in our Autism Orientation. An autism professional will discuss evidence-based practices for treating autism and review commonly used terminology.

Healthy Bodies for Boys and Girls - Thursday, August 27, 2015
Puberty can be a stressful and confusing time, especially for you and your child with an Intellectual and/or Developmental Disability (I/DD). In spite of delays in other areas, children with I/DD usually enter puberty around the same time as other children their age. There will be two sessions, one for boys and one for girls to discuss resources and tips on how to talk to your son or daughter about these sensitive topics.
Cassandra Newsom, Psy.D. is a neuropsychologist and clinician, Newsom does clinical diagnostic evaluations in the Division of Developmental Medicine, Pediatrics, for children of various ages who have or are suspected of having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Amy Weitlauf, Ph.D., has a broad background in clinical and developmental psychology, with specific training and expertise in the early identification of autism spectrum disorders (ASD).Click here to register.
