Dear Students and Families,
We have fielded several questions in recent days about how long a student must wait before returning to school or athletics if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, such as a family member. As a reminder, as stated in our campus reopening plan (brebeuf.org/reopening): "According to the Indiana State Department of Health, “if an individual in one’s home has COVID-19 or is quarantined because of COVID-19, those in the household should also stay home for a minimum of two weeks.”
To further clarify, the standard is that the student should wait 14 days from the last "close contact" with a COVID-19 positive individual, before returning to school. The CDC defines "close contact" as being within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more.
So, if someone in your household other than your Brebeuf student(s) becomes positive for COVID-19, we recommend keeping your student away from "close contact" with that person as soon as possible, and monitoring closely for symptoms. Many will also choose to get the student tested for COVID-19 in that situation, but that test result does NOT change the 14-day waiting period before returning to school.
If your family finds yourself in this situation, please contact the attendance line as soon as possible (for summer school this is Shani Simonson at ssimonson@brebeuf.org or 317 524-7080), to let us know that your student will need to stay home for this reason. We will follow up to clarify the return date, which will be 14 days after the last close contact. We will let the student's teacher(s) know, and the teacher(s) will help the student access the home learning platform to continue to participate in class. We will work hard to ensure that students who need to stay home for this reason, are able to fully keep up with their classwork from home. This is to make it fully possible for everyone to exercise caution and to stay home when needed.
Thank you,
