I’ve been reflecting of late on those beautiful Wordsworth lines from The Prelude: “What we have loved, others will love, and we will teach them how.” Something about the end of the school year evokes that passage for me, this season when graduations, major award wins, defended theses, and so many other celebrations invite us to encounter the fruits of our students’ well-ordered loves. That’s what I appreciate most about working at a university, I think: that students and colleagues continue, all the time, to inspire me to love new things because they show me new things to love—and teach me how.
Our final newsletter of the school year is chock full of such items: student scientists sharing their love of science with local high schoolers; student researchers presenting at URSA Scholars Week; student winners of major awards like the Goldwater, Boren, Pickering, and CLS; and students like Karly Shepherd, Sarah Beno, John Austin DeLozier, and Isabella Zárate, this year’s OEL Award winners, who offer us what Alfred North Whitehead once called a “habitual vision of greatness.”
Enjoy reading about this, and so much more, below. Best wishes as you round out the school year. And happy summer, y’all!
Cheers,
