Luduan     10" x 7" x 7"      High-fire paperclay stoneware

In Chinese folklore, a luduan is an auspicious creature said to detect truth and master languages.  I love the idea that there are such things as auspicious animals, especially ones that look as though they are laughing.  In my pieces I strive to balance texture and smoothness.  I find that I am happiest with the results when I let my fingers form the clay without thinking about it too much.  Just do it!

Ms. Davies' formal education was in the sciences.  She came to ceramics through serendipity and a friend (“Why don’t you try it with me?”).  She has been working in the ceramics studio at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge since 2012 and has been missing the group’s camaraderie, conversation, and helpful advice since the pandemic started.  She loves the Zen-like feeling that focusing on the work in front of her provides.

Jackie Steimke
June 19, 1939 - May 5, 2021

It is with great sorrow that we announce that long-time PSA member Jackie Steimke died on May 5th after a long struggle with cancer.

Jackie was a fireball of energy, joy,  enthusiasm and creativity, and her glass artwork reflected her spirit and her love of life.  She was fun and funny, generous with her time and her friendship, and she and her husband Bill frequently hosted expansive parties for PSA at their beautiful home.  She always supported PSA fully by volunterering on the Board as Programs Director and later as Recording Secretary, and she was always ready to help with exhibitions and hospitality - wherever she was needed.  She will be deeply missed.

Volunteer Appreciation
Darien Donner

Thanks to Darien for soliciting newsletter submissions and creating the newsletter layout.  Submitted by Victor Picou.

I became a member of PSA in 2017.  Right away I was impressed with how well PSA communicated with its members and how professionally it organized many exhibitions.  PSA is a volunteer-based non-profit organization.  I felt the need to help out and started with small volunteer jobs:  Blick’s artist-demonstrations liaison, hanging paintings at art shows, art fair coordinator, etc.

When the volunteer job for coordinating and putting together the monthly newsletter came up, I just jumped in and accepted the position.  With the help of many resourceful members I am learning more and more about this volunteer job, one I had no expertise in.  It gives me courage to perhaps tackle new PSA volunteer positions in the future.

The Artist’s Choice Exhibition (ACE) goes live on ISSUU June 1. Thirty-two members submitted 104 artworks, making this ACE one of the largest exhibitions PSA has ever put on.  Following the live online version a printed catalog will be available for purchase through Blurb.  As with previous exhibition catalogs, the initial order receives a big discount, so please consider placing your order through PSA to get the best price.  More information on the order process will be part of the announcement regarding the printed catalog.

The Exhibition Committee and Tom Oldfield, the Chair for Artist’s Choice, want to thank all of the members that submitted their artwork, and the catalog production team:  Alison Davies, Editor; Karen Hochman Brown, Art Director; Debbi Swanson Patrick, Director of Communications; and Larry Rodgers, the Catalog Designer.

The next exhibition opportunity for all PSA members is the “Oil & Acrylic” Exhibition.  This exhibition is for any artwork created using oil or acrylic paint or media.  This is an online exhibition going live July 15.  The Call For Entries (CFE) will be sent out very soon.  There will be a digital take-in using SmartSheet.

Looking further ahead into 2021, unfortunately the October exhibition at the Pasadena Central Library has been canceled due to the closure of the library building for safety reasons.

That’s it for this month.  Real live gallery installations are coming later this year!  The Exhibition Committee is looking forward to returning to art galleries with all of the related activities.

Thanks everyone.
