Over the years, I’ve gotten to know some amazing people in our community through volunteer work. Some of my oldest and dearest friends came from experiences with local nonprofit organizations!
I’d like to challenge you to give back “time or treasure” by year end, (or kick off 2017 by learning more about a nonprofit organization you aren’t familiar with!) A donation is always appreciated, of course, but the gift of time, just a few hours a month, can lead to new experiences that are extremely rewarding!
My first volunteer involvement in Collierville started in 1995 when I was invited by my neighbor, Aven Russell, to become a TWIG. Founded in 1978, “Together We Initiate Growth and Sharing” (TWIGS) is an auxiliary group that supports and serves Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital through fundraising, health advocacy, and promotional events. We helped with numerous events, including the Enchanted Forest. We even hosted a couple American Girl Teas! Our girls were little at the time and they really enjoyed seeing "Momma" dressed up in a 1904 period costume. Aven and I are friends to this day because of the bond we formed while giving back to the community.
I always get much more than I give when I spend time working with caring volunteers.
As our children grew, we started volunteering as a family. Helping with Angel Tree families through the Kiwanis Club and participating in local fundraisers is a big part of who we are.
