Dear Eagle Nation:
As we pause to celebrate Thanksgiving, I am reminded in a deeply meaningful way of how appreciative I am of this community and the spirit of generosity that defines Coppin State University. Last Thursday’s campus-wide Friendsgiving an opportunity to share a meal but a powerful reminder that family is not only the one we are born into, but also the one we create together through kindness, inclusion, and care for one another.
I am especially proud to announce that, through your generosity, we collected 451 pairs of socks and gloves that will be donated to local homeless shelters. As the weather turns colder, these gifts will offer warmth, dignity, and hope to neighbors who need it most. Acts like this reflect the very heart of Coppin’s mission, using education, empathy, and service to transform lives and strengthen our community.

In this season of gratitude, I am thankful for our students, whose resilience, curiosity, and dreams push us all to be better; our dedicated faculty, who pour their expertise and hearts into empowering the next generation; our committed staff, whose often-unseen work keeps this university moving forward every single day; and our proud alumni, who carry Coppin’s legacy into the world and demonstrate the impact of an education rooted in purpose and justice.

I am also especially grateful for my family, my wonderful wife and the First Lady of Coppin State University, Toinette, and our daughters, Ashley and Alicia. Their love, patience, and unwavering support sustain me and make it possible for me to give my best to this role. I am equally thankful for the privilege of serving as President of Coppin State University. It is an honor to walk alongside you, to witness your achievements, and to help steward an institution that has meant so much to so many for generations.

Friendsgiving 2025
While you are enjoying this holiday, I encourage you to make intentional time for relaxation and reflection. Rest your body, quiet your mind, and reflect on the journey that has brought you to this moment. Consider not only the challenges you have faced, but also the strength, community, and grace that have carried you through.

I value each of you, your talents, your contributions, and your belief in Coppin State University. Our collective work and shared commitment make this campus a true home for transformational excellence.

Coppin State Strategic Priorities in Action

Mr. John McCray
Mr. John McCray, Student Employment Relations Coordinator in the Eagle Achievement Center, brings Coppin’s vision of being a university of choice to life every day. He builds on Coppin State’s student-centered approach by connecting students with meaningful employment opportunities through collaboration and strategic partnerships.

“Through initiatives such as Career Talk Mondays and Workforce Wednesdays, I bring industry leaders to campus to engage directly with our students, showcasing the exceptional talent Coppin has to offer,” he explains. “Additionally, I organize career fairs throughout the academic year, providing access to opportunities across a wide range of industries and academic disciplines. These efforts support a seamless transition from classroom to career, reinforcing Coppin’s commitment to producing career-ready graduates.”

Mr. McCray invites us all to join him in this work by helping to “foster an environment where students feel supported, heard, and empowered. Every interaction is an opportunity to make a difference—by engaging in meaningful conversations about students’ aspirations and helping them chart a clear path toward their goals.”

Ms. Marcia Flournoy
Ms. Marcia Flournoy, Administrative Assistant in the Department of Instructional Leadership and Professional Development, embodies Coppin's strategic priority of being a great university at which to work.

A proud advocate for Coppin State University, Ms. Flournoy recognizes its longstanding role as a cornerstone of West Baltimore, a source of pride and admiration in the community. Reflecting on Coppin’s evolution, she shares, “When it was later designated as a university, it only strengthened what we already knew—Coppin would always remain an essential part of our community.”

Today, she sees a campus that has not only endured, but thrived. With rising enrollment and innovative academic initiatives, Coppin is alive with what she describes as “a vibrant sense of purpose,” marked by camaraderie and a strong community spirit.

In her role, Ms. Flournoy provides essential support to graduate students as they advance their careers. Beyond her administrative responsibilities, she contributes her time and talents as a member of the Coppin State University Choir and as Secretary/Treasurer of the campus chapter of the AFSCME Union, where she advocates for a fair and supportive work environment.

Ms. Flournoy encourages others to get involved and grow with the university: “I encourage everyone to discover their niche and, as opportunities arise, volunteer for initiatives where you can make a meaningful impact.” By engaging in the many activities and projects on campus, she believes each person can help make Coppin an even greater university at which to work.

Giving Tuesday

On December 2nd, Coppin State University will proudly participate in Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity and purpose. Our goal is to raise $10,000 in support of our annual fund—fueling the scholarships, programs, and student experiences that define the Coppin legacy.

We believe in the power of community. This is why we are calling on our faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends to join hands and help us meet and exceed this goal. Every gift, no matter the size, directly supports urgent and ongoing needs across the University.

Together, we can turn possibility into progress. Join us on December 2nd and be a part of something transformational.
