Celebrating our volunteers

The rain couldn't keep us from celebrating our amazing volunteers on a humid May night at the beautiful Eastwood Farm and Winery. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. We appreciate each and every one of our volunteers! Without you, we couldn't exist (after all, volunteers is in our name). We also want to thank Eastwood for donating the event space. Thank you for your generousity!
We especially want to recognize our volunteers of the year!
Ali Buchanon is a tutor and citizenship teacher. Additionally, she has volunteered the front desk, sat in on numberous tutor panels, led workshops, and is all-around fabulous! Program Manager Steven Reid writes, "Ali’s unwavering support and passion for lifelong learning truly embody the spirit of service, and we are so grateful to celebrate her outstanding contributions."
Leslie Scheurer not only volunteers as a wonderful tutor but also regularly sits in on tutor panels, and serves on our curriculum committee, helping identify LVCA materials that might be of interest to other organizations. "Her thoughtful leadership and deep passion for education make her an inspiring example of what it means to give back," writes Steven.
We also gave a special recognition to Scott DeGraw for his generous donation of his time and expertise for our Wordplay videos. Scott just joined us this year as a tutor and instantly stepped up to help with these videos. Steven writes, "These stories captured the heart of what we do—bringing to life the voices, relationships, and impact of our community. Scott’s creativity, technical skill, and genuine commitment to our mission made these videos not only possible, but deeply moving."
We are so grateful to our amazing volunteers! Thank you for being part of the Literacy Volunteers family! Together, we are changing lives, one word at a time!

A summer at Monticello (Civic Season and Oath Ceremony)

Literacy Volunteers is proud to announce two upcoming events at Monticello this summer.
On Monday, June 16 from 11:30-4:00, we’ll be showcasing our work as part of Civic Season, an event series that seeks to provide deeper understanding of constitutional democracy, historical preservation, and civic responsibility. Stop by Monticello's Visitor Center and say hello! Learn more about Civic Season at monticello.org/civicseason.
Join us on the 4th of July for Monticello's annual naturalization oath ceremony. Literacy Volunteers will have a table with other community partners. Stop by, say hello, hear Ken Burns give the keynote speech, and cheer on the folks, including LVCA students, as they swear in as citizens. You can reserve your free tickets here

Botanical Garden

When the Botanical Garden of the Piedmont reached out about hosting a private tour of the Garden for our students and tutors, we couldn't say yes fast enough. LVCA and Botanical Garden volunteers Nancy and Daria generously hosted our tutors and students on a rainy Wednesday morning with the message that the Garden is open for all. We are so grateful for the Botanical Garden and Nancy and Daria for thinking of our students and creating such a beautiful and welcoming event. You can find out more about all that the Botanic Garden of the Piedmont offers here
