Dear Friend,

Pacific Coast Energy Company (PCEC) is proposing to expand their cyclic steam operation - a highly polluting, water intensive method of oil extraction - and drill another 144 wells near Orcutt.  PCEC currently operates several oil wells using this dangerous method and has an appalling history of over 99 accidental oil seeps and 24 oil spills! We need your help today in urging the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors to deny this polluting project – the first in a series of upcoming harmful oil drilling projects that will come before the County.

Earlier this year, on behalf of our clients at Sierra Club and SBCAN, EDC successfully convinced the Planning Commission to deny PCEC’s project due to significant environmental damage already suffered by its existing cyclic steam drilling.  Then, at a meeting last month, PCEC convinced the Board to continue the hearing to November 1st in order to review new information it submitted at the eleventh hour.  However, none of PCEC’s new information provides any meaningful measures to lessen or avoid this project’s significant impacts to sensitive species, habitats, and water quality.  We need your help to stop this dirty and risky oil project.

3 WAYS YOU CAN HELP DENY THIS PROJECT
1. Call your Supervisors: Urge them to DENY PCEC’s appeal

3. Email the Board of Supervisors
Copy and paste the following talking points and send them to your
County Supervisor and to sbcob@co.santa-barbara.ca.us by Monday,October 31st.
Dear Honorable Supervisors,
I urge you to DENY PCEC’s appeal, and support the Planning Commission’s decision to protect our County from further damage from PCEC’s oil seeps and spills.
  1. PCEC’s oil project is one of the dirtiest and riskiest oil operations in the County – last year PCEC was  #1 in the County for oil spills.
  2. PCEC’s oil operations have resulted in 99 uncontrolled oil seeps and 24 oil spills! If the project or any alternative is approved by the Board, the seeps and oil spills will continue.
  3. None of PCEC’s “new information” presented at the last hearing avoids or significantly decreases the projects numerous Class I impacts to endangered species, habitat or water quality.
  4. The project’s uncertain benefits, like short-term construction jobs, do not come close to outweighing its significant impacts.
 Sincerely,
