National Health Care for the Homeless Council

As the November 3 election draws closer, communities and organizations must consider how they will ensure everyone has the ability to exercise their right to vote during a pandemic. The Council has recently hosted two webinars on registering and mobilizing voters and posted the recordings to our website: Registering People Experiencing Homelessness to Vote and Getting People to the Polls.

Another valuable resource is Vot-ER, a web portal to help people determine their registration status, register to vote, or request a mail-in ballot from their state. NHCHC has a specialized link for our community to share widely with colleagues and clients. We recommend HCH staff add a line to their email signature “Check to see if you are registered, register to vote, or request a mail-in ballot in your state here.” You can also download resources for staff (badges with QR codes (back) or phone lock screen with QR code) or encourage people to text “Vote NHCHC” to 34444 to begin the process. Call for HCH2021 Proposals and Reviewers

The Council continues to accept proposals for the 2021 National HCH Conference & Policy Symposium through October 25. We also are seeking reviewers!

HCH2021 will bring together hundreds of individuals from across the HCH field on May 10-13 in Baltimore, MD, and we need your expertise to determine which proposals will become part of our agenda. Reviewers will be responsible for grading assigned proposals (no more than 15) online beginning in November. The deadline to apply is midnight PT on Sunday, October 25.

Invitation to Join Council-Sponsored Learning Collaboratives

Several new learning collaboratives will start this fall and will continue over the next several months. These initiatives are designed for health centers, PCAs and HCCNs, and other organizations interested in quality improvement, practice transformation, and peer learning.

Medicaid and Managed Care Financing Strategies that Support Medical Respite Care Programs

The National Institute for Medical Respite Care (NIMRC) recently hosted a webinar featuring program administrators from two very different medical respite programs who discussed how they worked together with their Medicaid/MCO partners in support of these programs. Leadership from UnitedHealthcare Community & State, a national Medicaid MCO, also talked about how they are supporting efforts to strengthen and expand medical respite programs in their markets.

Council Welcome New Staff Members

Three new employees joined the Council in September.

Hugo Aguas (top left) works with the research team as a Research Associate. Working to research health outcomes using data-driven methodologies, he collaborates with community health partners throughout the country to develop educational materials related to medical care for those experiencing homelessness.

As Administrative Coordinator, Julia Nettles (center) has a variety of responsibilities in the areas of finance and administration, including accounts receivable and accounts payable; office maintenance; operations; and database support.

Caitlyn Synovec (top right) is the Council's Medical Respite Manager and works with the Director of Medical Respite on projects of the National Institute for Medical Respite Care (NIMRC) and the Respite Care Providers' Network (RCPN).
