Have a voice in spending decisions during Wednesday’s budget forum |
Faculty and staff are invited to attend the 2024 Winter Budget Forum this Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 3 - 5 p.m. in the Smith Memorial Student Union (Smith) ballroom
. The focus of this forum is on shaping the budget for the upcoming fiscal year (FY 2025). There will also be a participatory budgeting activity with the Balancing Act tool introduced last fall, facilitated by Assist. Prof. Franklin Muthomi from the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. Strategic Planning: Participate in person or virtually this week

What does PSU do well? What should we do more of so students achieve their goals? Your input about these questions and more is extremely important for creating a university-wide strategic plan that will guide PSU in future decision-making about spending, programs and services. Faculty and staff are invited to attend the final in-person engagement event in this phase of strategic planning on Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Smith Ballroom. If you can’t attend in person,
there’s also a virtual option available — now through this Friday, Feb. 23. Please encourage students to participate virtually or in person!

RSVP to this week’s Presidential Speaker Series event

This week brings the second event in the 2024 Presidential Speaker Series. On Thursday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m.* in the Smith ballroom, Dr. Rowena Tomaneng, president of San José City College, will provide examples, insights and food for thought on how PSU can become a model Minority Serving Institution for the Pacific Northwest. Provost Fellow application deadline extended |
The new application deadline to be a Provost Fellow within the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) is this Friday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. There are two fellowship opportunities available for the spring term — one for a faculty member and one for a staff member. The position includes monthly compensation and workspace at OAA. The scope of work and application process can be found at the Academic Affairs webpage.

Save the Date: Fulbright Scholar Info Session |
Mark down Friday, Apr. 5 from 1 - 2 p.m. for a virtual information session about the Fulbright Scholar program, which provides opportunities for U.S. faculty and administrators with interests in overseas teaching, research and seminars. Hosted by Alexa Rowland, program officer of IIE Fulbright in New York, the session will cover types of Fulbright opportunities, eligibility, tips for a strong application, and important deadlines.

2024 Legislature: Week one in Salem was jam-packed |
PSU’s Government Relations team brings a blog update from the first week of a fast-tracked 2024 Legislative session. Dozens of PSU and other Oregon public university supporters visited Salem to lobby in favor of funding the universities’ collective top priorities this session, which include basic needs support for students, behavioral health workforce development and a semiconductor talent and workforce package. The blog post includes updates on a variety of bills, including Measure 110 reforms, as well as some fun photos with PSU President Ann Cudd and Victor E. Viking on University Day.

Share with students: Seeking the next cohort of URISE researchers |
The PSU URISE (Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement) program is recruiting for its fourth cohort of scholars. Students accepted into URISE will learn foundational skills of research and experience a 2-year paid placement in research learning communities focused on solving some of the world’s most pressing health issues! Students are also offered monthly stipends and a percentage of tuition is paid. Applications are open and will close on Feb. 26 at 8 a.m. Application support for students is available. Please share the URISE page with students and encourage them to apply!

Deadline approaching for Portland State song competition |
The deadline is March 1 to submit lyrics for a school song to the Alma Mater song competition. This song — or poem — will be short, metrical, rhyming, and simple enough to sing in under two minutes. The winning lyrics will be set to a melody composed by a PSU faculty member from the School of Music & Theater. The winning entry will be selected by a committee, with campus input. This competition is open to PSU students, alumni, faculty, and staff. A $500 prize will be awarded to the winner!

The Basketball Shooting Challenge concludes with Hot Spot Shooting. Join us today, Monday Feb. 19 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the MAC Court! You have one minute to score as many points as possible from different spots on the court worth different point values. Free for Campus Rec members; $7 for non-members.

What do alumni want from PSU? |
This past summer the PSU Alumni Association surveyed more than 80,000 PSU alumni to ask what they wanted from their alumni association. The results will help shape and grow programming. See the results online here, or attend a presentation on the survey results Monday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m.

Not all love stories are romantic and not all love stories are about other humans. With that in mind, enjoy the PSU Love Stories on the Inside Portland State blog about faculty, staff, students and alumni — and the love they found at Portland State. This feature was part of a Valentine’s Day campaign with University Communications and the Alumni Association, where PSU community members were invited to submit their love stories for publication.
