Navigating National Narratives
| |
Our spiritual theme of the 2024-2025 year is “Join the Journey” and this month we are focused on the topic of “Story” as a way into our theme. We are in the rising tension moments of our national story with the elections on Tuesday, November 5th as the final day to cast ballots. How has narrative shaped our democratic process? Let us also reflect on what will nourish us through whatever happens in the week ahead. (And, please, if you haven’t yet, cast your ballot today!)

Minister's ColumnCounting on Community
| |
I remember when I first signed the membership book and made an annual pledge. It was the October break of my freshman year in college, and another time when reproductive health, rights, and justice were on the ballot. The election season put into clear focus that the values that guided both my vote and my life came from being Unitarian Universalist. Since I had graduated from our children’s religious education program, I understood that religious community is a lifelong pursuit of making meaning and making a difference. I was ready to fully commit to the church as an adult...MORE

Welcome to Our "Season of Giving" for 2025
| |
|
Each autumn, First Unitarian asks its members and friends to make a “Pledge,” a promise of financial support, for the coming calendar year. You can give to the church anytime, but it is our Season of Giving that funds our budget and pays our staff.
Our goal during this time is to give everyone an opportunity to reflect on:
- What brings you here
- What keeps you coming back
- The commitments both personal and spiritual we are all held to here
- The spiritual practice that is giving joyfully
What we are asking this year is that you make a financial pledge for 2025 that demonstrates your steadfast commitment to First Unitarian Portland and the difference our collective voice, vision, and actions can make in the world.
All gifts matter and every dollar brings us closer to our goal.
Thank you for the generosity of this congregation and to all those who have already pledged for 2025 so that this congregation my continue to thrive!

Election Week Spiritual Grounding Opportunities
Tuesday, November 5, 7 - 8 p.m. Location: Zoom
Wednesday, November 6, 12 - 2 p.m. Location: Eliot Chapel and Buchan Reception
| |
|
These are tender and anxious times for our country and our democracy. We know folks are looking for ways to stay spiritually grounded and be in community as election results come in. Here are two opportunities:
Virtual Election Night Service
Take a break from watching election returns and join Assistant Minister Danielle Garrett and members of our lay ministry team for a grounding and contemplative virtual service of prayer, poetry, and music from 7 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. Join us on Zoom.
Drop-in Community Gathering and Prayer
Drop by Eliot Chapel or Buchan Reception during the lunch hour to process the election results (or unfolding results) together from 12 - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6. We will have a short program of prayer and readings at 12:30 in Eliot Chapel and the chapel will remain open for quiet prayer or meditation. Buchan Reception will be open during this time with coffee and snacks if you’d like to spend some time in community with others. Ministers and lay ministers will be on hand to hold space for all we might be feeling. Feel free to bring your own lunch and stay for all or part of the two hours.
Please check the church’s website for any updates on these events. Responding to unpredictable political events, especially in these divided times, often requires us to be nimble.

NEW! — A Picture Paints a Thousand Words... And a Thousand Words Can Paint a Picture!
Sundays, November 3 and 10, before and after service Location: Welcome Table

The Big Word Cloud Reveal will be on Celebration Sunday!

|
Our Season of Giving has begun, a time for all of us to reflect on what the church means to us and how we can be good stewards. When you pledge a gift to “Join the Journey of Generosity” you help fund our programming, services, ministry, social justice efforts, and staff. We hope you are able to make a commitment in the coming weeks. Please pledge before Celebration Sunday on November 17!
Your Board’s Finance Committee has been busy creating task forces to address the goals we have set for this year. As your treasurer, Roger Robinson, I’ve been very fortunate to have a number of knowledgeable and committed board members and members from the congregation to assist in these efforts. We welcome any member to join in these efforts...MORE

We mourn.
Exploding pagers. Targeted killing of innocent civilians, demolished hospitals, schools, refugee encampments, water supplies. Delayed and blocked relief convoys.
Genocide in Gaza, brutality in the West Bank, the bombing of Lebanon, and now the great threat of major Middle East war and conflagration...MORE

For the month of November, we share our plate with Oregon's Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (IMIrJ). Its mission is to support and equip communities and people of faith to advance immigrant justice through direct accompaniment of immigrants facing detention and deportation, policy advocacy at local, state, and national levels, and purposeful organizing. Through networks of relationships, IMIrJ creates a more just world for immigrants, migrants, and asylum seekers by taking immediate humanitarian action and long-term collective, intentional action. First Unitarian's Immigrant Justice Action Group has been a close partner of IMIrJ for 10 years, and we are grateful for their ongoing interfaith organizing. Our spiritual theme for November is Story, so click here to read one from IMIrJ.
