June 24, 2024
Welcome back to another edition of our weekly newsletter! In this edition, we're previewing a number of resources to prepare you for the fall semester. If you still have questions about how to navigate Eagle Service for course registration, we offer Drop-in Hours. Our first New Eagle Essentials webinar is this Tuesday night and will give you a chance to meet some of the campus staff who will help you thrive as a student here. And, our Flight Ready! Canvas course will introduce you to some of the resources available to all AU students.
Now that you have begun registering for classes, a student billing statement has been created online for you at Eagle Service. The bill may not be complete yet, as you may be on a waitlist, and housing and dining charges have not yet been applied. On July 1, an email will be sent to you (and your proxies) directing you to view the complete bill online. Please read on for information about the meal plans available; an explanation of some of the mandatory fees you will see on your account; instructions on how to grant proxy access for parents or guardians to access your bill; and an overview of the health insurance plan.
Finally, as you're thinking about life on campus, we want you to make American feel like home. To do so, we've included more information about what to pack and what not to pack as you prepare to move into your residence halls, and we also have some Save the Dates for our virtual, end-of-semester affinity welcomes!

"Try out as many clubs and organizations as possible in your first few weeks. In my first semester, I joined around a dozen different clubs, and while I definitely don't recommend committing to that many, it's good to get a feel for how you interact with different groups of students."

| Eagle Service Drop-in Hours |
📚 Course registration is well underway for all new students! If you have any questions about the logistics of registering for your first-semester courses, don't forget to join our Orientation Chairs for their Eagle Service Drop-in Hours. While they're not there to give you academic advice or tell you what courses to take (that's what your academic advisor is for), they can help walk you through how to navigate Eagle Service and the course registration process.
For a full schedule of drop-in hours and the Zoom links, visit the Eagle Service Drop-in Hours page in the Flight Ready! Canvas course.

💰 Your first bill is right around the corner! On or around July 1, an email will be sent to you (and any established proxies), notifying you that your bill is ready to be viewed online. That bill is due Thursday, August 1. You will see a number of line items on that bill, but we wanted to give you a glimpse into some of the programs that we're most excited about:
|
- Metro UPass: The UPass program enables full-time AU students to take unlimited rides of DC's Metrobus and Metrorail systems during the academic year.
-
Student Orientation Program Fee: This is a one-time charge applied to all registered first-year and transfer students to support programs, resources, and services that help new Eagles integrate with the AU community.
|
A vast majority of universities, including American University, have a tuition and mandatory fee policy. With this type of policy, mandatory fees are assessed to all (or groups) of students in order to help defray associated costs, not based on actual usage of an individual student. For a full breakdown of the mandatory fees you'll find in your student bill, please visit the Student Accounts website.

🦅 Flight Ready! is AU’s online pre-orientation program that allows incoming students to get the support and the resources they need to navigate life as an AU Eagle. From June to July, Flight Ready! connects students to campus offices, the storied history of the University, their peers, and opportunities to get involved and make a difference.
You should have received an invitation to the Canvas course last week. You can access Canvas through the AU Library's website by logging in using your AU credentials.

🍽️ Whether you're stopping in for a quick bite or you have specific dietary restrictions or wellness goals in mind, the variety of AU's dining options makes it easy to meet your needs. Student organizations, Auxiliary Services, and the Office of Sustainability all work together to provide the campus community with food that is locally sourced, ethically produced, healthy, and delicious.
The main dining space on campus is the Terrace Dining Room (TDR), located in the Mary Graydon Center. Right now, TDR is undergoing renovations in preparation for the fall semester, so get excited for a brand new dining experience! In addition to TDR, campus also has a number of well-known eateries, including Qdoba and Panera.
Students living on campus are required to purchase a meal plan, but you have a choice between two different plans. All on-campus eateries accept payment through your One Card via meal swipes, retail meal exchanges, and/or Dining Dollars. To learn more about the on-campus meal plans on the One Card and Dining Services, visit their website by using the button below.

📋 Not only are all AU students required to have health insurance, but it's a good practice to demonstrate, too. All students are automatically charged for health insurance once they register full-time, but have the option to submit a waiver request if you are already covered by a comparable insurance plan. To determine if your insurance qualifies as a comparable plan, visit the AU Central website.
The deadline to submit a health insurance waiver is Monday, September 9.
