PHUMC Art for the Roof

In June, we shared with our church family the need to replace the roof of our worship center building, and we laid out a fundraising plan asking households to prayerfully discern giving $300 to get us to our $60,000 goal by the end of August. Parkway Hills family, you stepped up! To date we have raised $52,428.68. That means we only have $7,571.32 left!  If you have not yet given to support this effort, we hope you are looking at how you may aid us in raising the roof.

We have 16 days left, and some Parkway Hills members are sharing their artistic gifts to aid us in reaching our goal. Our quilters have donated a fabulous quilt (or you can come to the quilt closet and pick out a quilt!). Charles Guess has donated one of his paintings (picture and info to come).  Judy Russell provided a beautiful birdhouse (value $100), and Bob Russell has given one of his handmade wooden bowls (value $80).  Beginning today, you can purchase a ticket and possibly go home with some PHUMC Art for the Roof.

Tickets are $15 and we find out the lucky winners Wednesday, Sept. 6 at our first Wednesday night meal together at 5:45. You do not have to be present to win and the art will be given in this order: 1st ticket = quilt, 2nd ticket = Charles Guess painting, 3rd ticket = Birdhouse, 4th ticket = Wooden Bowl. You can use this link to get a ticket and pay via our Vanco mobile app or online here (look for PHUMC Art for the Roof). You can also get paper tickets and give in person at the church beginning Sunday, August 20.  We hope you will invite coworkers, family, and friends to purchase a ticket.  If every household sells 5 tickets, we will reach our goal and then some.  Any extra funds we receive above the cost of the roof will be used for other building needs. We do best what we do together Parkway Hills, so let’s continue to work together to raise the roof!

Welcome, Martha!

We are delighted that Martha McCown has joined our PHUMC family. Please let Martha know how happy we are by greeting her in person at Worship and sending her a message here.
We have had a lot of new faces and some new individuals to join our church family, and we want to aid everyone in getting to know each other. When you enter worship this Sunday, pick up a name tag (August is nametag month at PHUMC) and look for a new face to greet. Let us continue to live into our first core value to welcome one another.
We need volunteers to operate the soundboard. It takes a team to make worship happen, and we would love to have you become part of that work. Thanks to a recent gift, we are able to install a new sound system, and we need you to aid us each week to run this soundboard during worship. Join us Thursday, August 17 at 6 pm in the worship center to learn about the new system and hear what serving in this way would mean. We know people's weekend schedules fluctuate so the more individuals we have, the bigger the list of names to volunteer and the lower the number of Sundays required for each volunteer. Hope to see you there, and if you can't make it but want to help, reach out to David White.
This Sunday meet our new District Superintendent!
Parkway Hills Leadership Board met Wednesday, August 9 and our hope after each meeting is to share with our church family what we feel are the "Top 3" discussion points from our meeting.  For our August meeting, we named small groups, budget, and visitors.
1) Small Groups: School has begun, routines are once again being established, and Fall is just around the corner (we hope!). This would be a great time for you to try a small group either on Sunday morning or throughout the week. Need help finding a small group?  Come see Pastor Dawn.  This is also a great time for us as a church family to think about some of the holes that may exist with regard to small groups and begin some new ministries. If you have a desire to be in intentional community and a passion that you want to share with others (books, camping, hiking, movies, sports, food) how may God be calling you to step up and create something new at Parkway Hills?
2) Budget: We give thanks for the ways our Parkway Hills family always steps up to the plate to meet needs as they are named. Our roof fundraiser is close to meeting its goal and we have given over $11,000 in mission in 2023 through our communion offerings. However, the past two months, we have failed to bring in the revenue to meet our expenses for the month.  We are also not currently paying our apportioned mission shares on a regular basis but are using designated funds to meet those needs.  We give thanks for those who routinely give to support the mission and ministry at Parkway Hills, and we invite those who may not have given yet in 2023 to prayerfully discern how they might give a little each month to aid us in meeting all of our financial needs and obligations.
3) Visitors: In 2023 Parkway Hills has had 108 visitors. 25 of those visitors were repeat from 2022, 36 have become regular visitors, 10 joined us at our Parkway Hills orientation meeting before the shrimp boil, and 8 have joined our church family.  We hope you are taking time to look around each Sunday and find one new face to greet.  May we indeed live into our first core value of welcome and be a United Methodist congregation committed to being a place for everyone.

Do you love Christmas music?  Are you a little worried about committing to choir every Sunday night? Then join us in the choir room Sunday, August 27 @ 5:30 for the Christmas Cantata Reveal!  Come listen to some of what we have planned, get all the info on the cantata, meet some of your church family, have some fun, and see if serving in this way this year is right for you. Following August 27 we will continue to practice for the cantata on Sunday nights at 5:30 but we will practice Christmas music first for those who are just attending to participate in the cantata. Nursery is available upon request.

Help us collect 500 jars of peanut butter throughout this school year! So far we've collected 4 jars. Don't forget to bring peanut butter with you to worship and our church activities.
We are in need of Extended Session volunteers. Extended Session is a time during the worship service that children explore and connect with scripture through activities, crafts and games. We offer Extended Session to children in K5 and younger. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Pastor Haven.
Sunday School Volunteers: Promotion Sunday on August 6 began our new age group Sunday School classes. We are starting a new unit studying the celebrations in the Bible. We will have four Sunday School classes from PreK - 6th grade and will need your help teaching the sessions. If you are interested in volunteering, click here to sign up to teach. All volunteers must have a background check before volunteering in children's ministry.
