Tomorrow is Giving Day at Brebeuf Jesuit, which coincides with our school's birthday.  On Giving Day, we celebrate two of the core components that are critical to our learning community - our rich tradition of educating men and women for others and the loyal, generous donors who bring that tradition to life.
We hope you’ll join fellow Giving Day donors by making your gift to The Brebeuf Fund, which supports need-based scholarships for 196 of our students.
Then, tell us why you give to Brebeuf using #BrebeufGivingDay!
ONE-BOOK ONE-BREBEUF CONVOCATION
SEPTEMBER 11
Brebeuf Jesuit will welcome Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author and Journalist Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique's Journey, to campus on Friday, September 11, at this year's One-Book One-Brebeuf all-school event. Sonia Nazario has spent more than 20 years writing about social justice issues including hunger and immigration and will engage students on these issues during her visit.
Enrique's Journey is the story of a Honduran boy's struggle to find his mother in the United States.
In preparation for Ms. Nazario’s visit, all Brebeuf Jesuit students, faculty and staff will have read Enrique’s Journey and will answer reflection questions that will be posted for them and submitted online prior to her visit on September 11. On the day of her visit, Brebeuf will have an all-school convocation where Sonia will address the school and take questions. Following the convocation, students will meet in small groups with facultyand staff members for discussion and dialogue about the book, giving them an opportunity to share their reflections after reading it.
Parent-Teacher Conferences - October 14 (Formerly Grade Night)
On Wednesday, October 14, all teachers will be present on campus to meet with parents from 4:00-7:00 p.m. to discuss their students' progress so far this semester. No appointment is needed, as teachers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. While parents are welcome to meet with all of your student’s teachers, please feel free to meet with only those for whom you have a question or concern. We politely ask that conferences be kept to 5-10 minutes, so that the teacher can be available to all parents. If you find you need more time, the teacher will ask that you schedule an appointment for a later date.
The teachers and the academic counselors will be organized alphabetically in two areas for meetings: the West Gym and the East Gym. Teachers with last names Annee-Karle will be located in the East Gym, and A. Keele-Woodcock will be located in the West Gym.  The Learning Center teachers will be located in the Learning Center (Room 111). Teachers that are located in the East Gym will take a break from 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. and teachers that are located in the West Gym will take a break from 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Don't miss this opportunity to chat with your child's teachers about any of your concerns or ideas. Parent-Teacher Conferences are designed to give parents and teachers time to meet and find ways to help your child succeed!
Before heading home for the evening, plan to stop by the Spirit Store, which will be open as well, from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Student Spotlight

LAUREN POYTHRESS '16
Loves about Brebeuf:
What I love most about Brebeuf is how our community is really just one big family. The relationships I have made with my fellow classmates as well as my teachers have allowed me to grow as a student and as a person.  I respect my teachers and I know that they have respect for me as well. There are so many opportunities as a student to grow closer with other members of the Brebeuf community; in fact, it is strongly encouraged.  I think it is very rare in schools that students willingly want to go sit and talk with teachers and faculty about things in their everyday lives that might not even involve school. That is what I think makes Brebeuf a very special place and is why I love my school so much. Anywhere I go I feel welcomed and safe.  I can easily say, between my freshman year to now being a senior, I have grown tremendously as a person, and it would not have been possible without my Brebeuf family.
Favorite Class:
Any of my math classes I have taken at Brebeuf.  Since a young age I have always enjoyed math, even though I might not have always done well in the class.  That all changed when I started at Brebeuf.  My teachers each year have made math interesting for me instead of just another class I have to take.  Each teacher understood my thought process on problems and were great about letting me figure out why my answers might be wrong so I could correct them for myself.  I am always excited to challenge myself and learn new things, but if I find myself stumped, I know who I can turn to for help.
Future Plans:
I hope to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, next fall.  While there I would like to study the brain by either majoring in psychology or neuroscience.  After my four years of college, it is my goal to attend law school.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:
Co-President of Black Student Union
Admissions Ambassador
Presidential Ambassador
Football Manager
Track & Field Team
Random Fact:
A random fact that I am very proud of is that I make some really great pizza.  One day last year I decided that I did not want to buy a pizza, so instead I decided to experiment in the kitchen and see if I could make myself a decent one.  Now when my parents or sister want pizza, they ask me instead of buying one.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Yes. Coming from a public school, I was nervous about the workload and how I would adjust to it all.  As a freshman, I was hesitant to go ask teachers for help because I thought it meant that I was not smart enough compared to my classmates who did not have to ask for help. In actuality, everyone was in the same boat as me. All four years, I have taken either honors or AP classes that I was not sure if I should be taking in the first place. Then I realized that my guidance counselor would not place me in classes that I was not prepared for.
The key thing that I have learned throughout my my years at Brebeuf regarding the rigor is that the faculty is here to help students succeed, not watch us fail.  I have learned the ways that I study best and built strong relationships with my teachers.  Looking back I wish I would have gone and asked my teachers questions sooner instead of letting the rigor intimidate me because it made understanding my work so much easier. The grades you get are a direct reflection on how much effort you put into your school work. The academics at Brebeuf are as rigorous as they say, but they are not impossible.
Who is your hero?
All of the adults in my family are my heroes because they are all people who I look to for advice in different aspects of my life. Out of all of them my grandparents are my biggest heroes in my eyes.  My grandparents raised my uncles and aunts to strive to be the best versions of themselves.  The lessons they instilled in their children were also instilled in me and are some of the reasons I have come so far in my lifetime.  I have never felt that I lacked support in anything I attempted, and I could not be more grateful to my family for this.
What is your dream job?
As of right now my dream job is to be a lawyer.  I am still not sure what type of lawyer I would like to be.  I have a passion for children, civil rights, and overall justice so I would want to be a lawyer that deals with one or more of these passions.  I would love to become a lawyer so I could use my God-given talents to make a difference in my community, the country, and impact the world for the better.

As leaders in the Indianapolis community and involved parents of Brebeuf Jesuit alumni Drew ’12 and Sam ’15, Andy and Lorna Mohr have demonstrated a deep commitment to Jesuit education through role-model-worthy volunteer involvement in their community, children’s lives, and in support of the students, faculty and staff at Brebeuf Jesuit.
In addition to their volunteer efforts at Brebeuf, they live our motto of Men and Women for Others with their service to the greater Indianapolis community through the United Way of Central Indiana, Junior Achievement, Indiana University, St. Luke’s Catholic Church and numerous other organizations.

View Progress Reports on Portals

The new Portals systems allows teachers to post Progress Reports directly from the gradebooks for families to view. Going forward, Brebeuf will utilize this method of communicating Progress Reports, beginning with our first report date of Wednesday, September 9. Formal reports will be available to families by noon that day. Parents and students will see Progress Reports under each individual course in the Progress Reports or Reports tab. Families can also see updated grade averages of all courses on their Portals homepage; just click “Progress” button on your student’s quick view window. Please note: Formal Progress Reports will no longer be emailed to families as in the past.
Questions regarding academic performance should be directed to the classroom teacher.

Mothers Association Interfaith Prayer Group

The Mothers Association Interfaith Prayer Group invites all parent figures to join them next week on Thursday, September 10, at their first meeting for the 2015-2016 school year. This meeting will take place from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. in the Brebeuf Jesuit Chapel. Being the first meeting of the year, the prayer group is happy to announce that Fr. Tom Merkel, the Vice President for Mission and Identity, will initiate the year as guest speaker to discuss the topic, "History of the Jesuits and Saint Ignatius." This will be a very informative session for everyone in the Brebeuf Jesuit community!
What is the Interfaith Group?
The Interfaith Prayer Group is for any parent who wants to spiritually lift up the needs of the students and the school community.  It is a low-key gathering of diverse faiths to share traditions and interesting discussions.  During our hour together, group members pray, exchange ideas, and listen to guest speakers. Come participate on the second Thursday of each month from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. in the Brebeuf Jesuit Chapel (Exceptions: October 15, 2015 - "Holy Cities and Religious Pilgrimages" on the third Thursday in October; December 10, 2015 - "Religious Holiday Traditions in Winter" in the Brebeuf Conference Room; and May 12, 2016 -  "Guided Tour of a Local Place of Worship", time and place TBD).

Register for Freshman Service Days

We will begin accepting permission forms for the Class of 2019 Freshman Service Days this week!  Freshman Service Days are completely voluntary and do not count towards the Community Service credit at Brebeuf.  They are offered each year to the incoming freshmen to help introduce them to Brebeuf Jesuit's mission of being men and women for others, and it is our hope that it will start them on a path of service beginning before and going far beyond the hours which they are required to complete during their junior and senior years.  This is also a great opportunity for freshmen to get to know more of their classmates outside of the classroom.
Freshmen can participate in one or all of the Freshman Service Days as space allows.  Class absences will be excused as long as permission slips are turned in two weeks prior to the trip.
More information and the permission slip can be accessed by clicking here.
If you have any questions, please contact Karla Geisse at kgeisse@brebeuf.org, or 317.524.7132.

PSAT Prep Course

In order to prepare for the PSAT (which all juniors will take on Wednesday, October 14), consider taking the Brebeuf Jesuit PSAT Prep course. For juniors, the test is a qualifying exam which determines National Merit status.
Please Note: This registration is for Juniors Only! There is NO PSAT Prep class for sophomores this year.
Veteran Brebeuf Jesuit teachers Patti Brown (former English teacher, current Learning Center Director) and Eric Graham (Mathematics teacher) will be teaching the Brebeuf Jesuit PSAT Prep Course to current juniors.  Both teachers are well-versed in the changes to the test this year.
For more information and to register, please click here.
For more information, please contact Eric Graham, 317.524.7028 or Patti Brown, 317.524.7027.

Brebeuf Jesuit E-Waste Drive

Friday, September 18, 2015 from 7:10 - 8:30 a.m.
Brebeuf’s Conservation Club is hosting an e-waste drive on Friday, September 18 from 7:10 - 8:30 a.m. with the help of Recycle Force, a non-profit recycling organization based out of Indianapolis.  Recycle Force will have a truck parked at the east end of the school’s parking lot by the soccer fields to collect e-waste.
The purpose of the drive is to provide the Brebeuf community with an opportunity to properly dispose of electronic waste, and to support an organization who seeks to improve our environment.
For a list of acceptable electronic devices, please click here.

Schedule Senior Picture Appointments

All members of the Class of 2016 must sit for their formal yearbook portrait with Prestige Photography by November 11, 2015. Failure to schedule and sit for this portrait by November 11 will mean that senior will not be featured in the 2015-2016 yearbook! The yearbook must be submitted to our printer in pieces throughout the year, with specific deadlines for each part. Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made! A yearbook-only portrait sitting fee is $15, and Prestige provides the wrap the ladies wear and the tuxedo top the gentlemen wear. Families are NOT required to use Prestige for their personal senior photos – just the yearbook photo. Contact Prestige today via phone (317.829.2088) or online at PrestigeIndiana.com to get an appointment.
Questions or concerns? Please email the yearbook instructor, Ms. Hadley Moore, at hmoore@brebeuf.org.

IU Honors Program - Summer Language Immersion/Travel Opportunity

Every summer, Indiana University offers a language immersion program to Indiana high school students. It is a unique opportunity to participate in a “total immersion” foreign language program in Chile, China, France, Mexico and Spain. This program significantly advances language skills and fosters cross-cultural understanding. The program combines academic language learning, cultural instruction, host family living and exciting educational excursions. Each year, Brebeuf Jesuit students are selected to participate in this 7-week program.
If your student is currently enrolled in a level 3 language class or higher and would like to apply for this opportunity, please have them talk to their World Language Teacher or Mrs. Peggy Poole. For more information, click here

Retreat Opportunities

Has your child signed up for a retreat yet this year? Retreats are a wonderful opportunity for students to take a break from the everyday stresses and grow in community with their classmates. Retreats focus on building and strengthening relationships with God, self, and others. Each retreat is designed to meet students where they are and offer a safe and fun environment. All students are encouraged to attend a retreat each year.
The dates for this year’s retreats are:
Freshman Retreat: October 29-30, November 19-20, March 3-4, or March 17-18
Sophomore Retreat: November 4-5, February 25-26, or March 10-11
Junior Retreat: November 12-13 or March 10-11
Kairos: September 15-18 (Full), January 12-15 (Seniors Only), February 9-12 (Juniors and Seniors), or April 19-22 (Juniors and Seniors)
Applications are available in the Campus Ministry office, located in the Student Commons. Please contact Jess Rewa (jrewa@brebeuf.org) or Mary Ann Wallace (mwallace@brebeuf.org) with any questions or concerns. Scholarships are available for students requiring financial assistance.

Join Team DAJ for the Out of Darkness Walk

On Saturday, September 12 at Celebration Plaza in White River State Park, hundreds of walking teams will come together at 3:00 p.m. to take positive strides to prevent suicide through the Out of the Darkness community walk downtown.
This year, Brebeuf senior Joe O’Neil ’16 and members of our student leadership have again registered “Team DAJ” for the walk and invite all members of our community – parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends - to join in and support the cause of suicide prevention. Last year, Team DAJ raised over $3,000 in this effort.
To join Team DAJ and/or donate to the cause, click here.
Net proceeds from the Out of the Darkness Community walks benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). To learn more about AFSP's mission, educational outreach, support, research and programs visit www.afsp.org.
