A pristine beach in Martin County, Florida.

THE GIFT OF GETTING AWAY: In the midst of the holiday bustle, you might find yourself wishing for a plane ticket in your stocking—perhaps somewhere heavy on nature and light on crowds. Treat yourself to an unspoiled slice of the Sunshine State with a trip to Martin County, Florida. For water lovers, Martin County’s twenty-two miles of pristine Atlantic coastline promise kiteboarding, scuba diving, and saltwater fishing. On solid ground there’s some 100,000 acres of protected land (how about a horseback ride through a cypress hammock?) and Native American heritage sites to explore. And when you’re ready to rub shoulders with people again, local small towns boast vibrant arts scenes and plenty of Old Florida charm. Plan your Martin County getaway.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina. My family is notorious for planning trips at the last minute. Wanting a little getaway without being too far from home, we booked a two-day staycation at the Sanctuary on Kiawah Island. Although we aren’t golf types, the resort’s Southern hospitality was just what we needed to unwind. Some highlights:
|
-
Festive vibes: After checking in, we stopped for a drink at the lobby bar, where a floor-to-ceiling Christmas tree illuminated the space. An even more gargantuan tree presides over the oceanfront view outside.
-
Fairway to heaven: We stopped for dinner at the Ryder Cup Bar, where views of the Ocean Course flooded through the large windows. Decked out for the holidays, the lounge area was a dimly lit hideaway with a fireplace and cozy couches.
- Breakfast in bed: On our first morning, we ordered a spread of chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes, bacon, grits, oatmeal, and of course, a pot of coffee (we don’t play around when it comes to meals, let alone breakfast—we’re Italian). Add in fresh fruit, ice-cold orange juice, and a balcony overlooking the ocean? It was hard to leave.
