Patriot Pride - Green and Gold by Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm
Are you a proud Patriot?
We’re officially ‘back to school.’ Our campus is full with folks coming and going to classes. And the leaves on the trees are just starting to turn colors. Now it’s time for us to turn out our colors as well.
George Mason University participates in College Colors Day and Spirit Fridays when students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to wear their Mason green and gold to show school spirit.
First celebrated in 2005, College Colors Day is nationally organized by the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC). College Colors Day always falls on the Friday before Labor Day and seeks to celebrate the spirit of tradition by encouraging students, faculty, staff, and alumni to wear apparel from their favorite school(s) throughout the day. On some college campuses, Fridays are awash with school colors as campus communities gear up for upcoming athletic competitions. Yet I would challenge that school spirit runs deeper than just amazing basketball, track, or swimming performances by our athletes.
In fact, I was never as proud of our university than when we mobilized for the pandemic.

STEMinists student group advocates to support women in STEM
by Damian Cristodero
For biology majors Areeba Qureshi and Aiza Asam, president and vice president, respectively, of George Mason University’s student-run organization STEMinists, their mission statement is clear.
“The number of women in STEM fields is very low compared to the number of men,” Qureshi said. “We really want to battle that gender difference and increase women who are in science and engineering.” Photo by Cristian Torres/Strategic Communications.

Mishin studying atomic transport in ultra-high temperature carbides by Elizabeth Grisham
Yuri Mishin, Professor, Physics and Astronomy, received $155,879 in funding from the Office of Naval Research for a project examining atomic transport in ultra-high temperature carbides (UHTCs).
The principal goal of the proposed research is to create a novel methodology for computational prediction of diffusion coefficients in high-temperature carbides and to demonstrate the new methodology by computing the self-diffusion and inter-diffusion coefficients in TaxHf1-xC carbides as a function of temperature and chemical composition.
