The William Penn Boy's Basketball Team is going to the Final Four at the Bob Carpenter Center! Tickets go on sale at noon Monday, March 6th for $10. As part of the "I Love to Read" celebrations members of the University of Delaware's undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. (AKA) visited Pleasantville Elementary School. The ladies from the Lambda Gamma chapter read books to children in grades K-5 and are pictured with Assistant Superintendent Dr. Nneka Jones (left) who is a proud AKA, along with the Graduate Chapter Advisor Mrs. Melanie Daniels(far right). "Service to all mankind" is what AKA's do!

State Auditor Lydia York visited New Castle Elementary School to read a book entitled "The ABC's of  Black History" by Rio Cortez. If you'd like your child to view it, click this LINK.

Many schools decorated doors and display cases for Black History Month. At Southern (top) there was a door decorating contest featuring facts about history-makers, at Leach an interactive Black History Month Museum was created for students, At McCullough (3rd row) teacher Khayree Bey created a powerful display case, while at Wilbur (bottom), the creative educational celebration was all captured in this LINK

Thanks to 3rd-grade teachers at Southern who wanted students to get creative while learning Black history, the cereal box program was born. The students were challenged with turning an empty cereal box into a lesson on a black history maker. As you can see the kids met that challenge for all to see. Great job Southern Sharks!

The first-ever "Legacy of Black Excellence" was a hit! More than 1,000 students were able to attend the live performances which were also live-streamed. The students did an excellent job showcasing their talents and sharing their cultural pride with everyone. Special thanks go out to Assistant Principal Frankie Bonilla for making sure this very important program took center stage just like it did during Hispanic  Heritage Month, along with other cultural celebrations to come.

Every month the New Castle Lion’s Club honors a William Penn senior as the student of the month. For February, Julia Drejka was selected by her counselor. Julia has maintained a 4.1 GPA since 9th grade. She's a member of the National Honor Society and wants to become a neuro pediatrician. She has been an active member of the Allied Health pathway at Penn while working a part-time job and she is involved in several groups including Choir, Allied Health HOSA, and Helping Hands Club. In May, the Lion’s Club will select one of the students of the month to receive a $1,000 scholarship. Good luck to our outstanding scholars!

Dr. Nicholas Baker, Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, and  5th-grade Eisenberg teacher Erica Sharp were recently honored by the Middle States Council for Social Studies. Baker received the Distinguished Service Award for promoting innovative ideas to support effective social studies education. Sharp was honored for emphasizing and advocating for social studies education. Thank you both for representing Who WE Are! 

Delaware legislators representing the Colonial  School District came to a dinner prepared by William Penn's Culinary Arts students. State Representatives Melissa Minor-Brown and Mike Ramone (left)  were among those in attendance. Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Menzer and his leadership team used the opportunity to discuss educational issues that impact our students with the hope they'll be addressed by the Delaware General Assembly. The Power of WE works even better over a great meal prepared by our great students!

State Representative Valerie Longhurst (left) and State Senator Nicole Poore (center) presented Wilbur Principal Beth Howell with a proclamation. It was a tribute to administrators, teachers, and students. Wilbur has been designated a 2022 National ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) Distinguished School for its educational advances and the student's academic achievements. Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Menzer was on hand to thank the lawmakers for recognizing Wilbur's hard work and academic excellence.

When Penn Farm's goat named Sugar gave birth on February 3rd, Ag teacher Karen Ferrucci wanted everyone to play a part in naming the two new additions. Students and staff in the district were invited to submit names for the little male and female which ranged from Salt & Pepper to Billy & Penny. After reviewing about two dozen entries, the names will be announced on March 16th. Sugar, along with Ag students can't wait until the sweet babies get their official names!

Thanks to funding from a program called Donors Choose that supports teacher's projects, McCullough held a STEM Delight Fun Night. The goal was to improve students' practical abilities and to promote their problem-solving skills all while motivating them to love science and build their self-confidence. Learning made fun!

Students at Eisenberg celebrated the first 100 days at school by dressing up like senior citizens. Fun was had by all as the kids reached a milestone in the school year.

What does Leach do on International Wheelchair Day?  How about a parade with balloons and decorated wheels on the chairs used by the students? As always, the students and staff had a great time!

Students behind the scenes at Penn News teamed up with students taking journalism classes so state and local lawmakers could be interviewed on air. Governor John Carney was in the spotlight, and so was US Senator Chris Coons. Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzyci is next. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Nneka Jones (left of governor)  was proud to see the students and teachers working together to give real-life industry experience to the high school scholars. Bebe Coker, a local education advocate and activist was interviewed by Public Information Officer Lauren Wilson as part of Colonial's Equity and Inclusion Speakers Series.
