Friends, I would like to share information that has come out in recent weeks around the projected TDSB budget shortfall for 2024-25. It’s not good.
We recently learned that without an increase in provincial funding there is a projected deficit of $35 million for the 2024-25 school year. What’s more, this shortfall already projects cuts to positions that were funded using one-time funding, this includes cuts to 28 vice principals, 12 social workers, and 11 child and youth counsellor positions. We don’t yet know which schools will be affected by these anticipated cuts.
TDSB staff are also exploring options to balance the budget that could include changes to outdoor education and continuing education – in other words, more cuts.
TDSB will be holding virtual budget town halls to provide information on this budget situation:
I do not support cuts. School boards cannot raise revenue they are funded by the province. I believe advocacy is needed for increased provincial funding to support our schools.
The 2024 provincial budget is still being written - this is a key time to advocate for the funding our school board needs to save staff!
Call the Premier – call anytime 416-325-1941. Give them a call, share your concerns about what this projected school deficit means for our community, and ask them to put more money into our school board. You can ask them to take note for the Premier. This makes a difference!
Thank you for taking action on this important issue, take care,
-Sara
